1999 Passat 1.8 liter: power steering out, generator light on

Driving a 1999 Passat 1.8 liter. Power steering went out and the generator (battery) light came on. Most other electronics appeared to work (e.g. lights, radio, climate fan). Serpentine belt? Something more horrible?

If you still have a belt on power steering pump then it may have ran dry. Check fluid in power steering pump. If no belt to pump then replace lost one.

chances are there is 1 belt that runs all of the componets and the belt has either came off or broke replace it and you should be good to go.

It sounds like you lost the belt that runs the power steering pump and the water pump and the alternator. Look under the hood at that belt.
