Question about 1997 GMC Sierra

2 Answers

Hard shifting After I drive it for a little while it starts to shift real hard into second gear. I can shut the truck off for a few minutes and start it back up and it will shift fine again. It shifts real hard, like it is going to break something when it is doing it. My cousin had something similar once and it was something to do with a computer chip or something like that. What do you think it is?

Hello;
The age of your truck could indicate a common problem with the transmission. The ignition switch or the neutral safety switch could be the fault here. I lean more towards the ignition switch. When the trans, tach and speedo start to go haywire, the switch needs to be replaced.
Thanks for listing;

My 97 expedition starts and runs good I'm driving down the road, Then the overdrive light starts blinking on the end of the shifter, So when I come to a stop then start to go again it shifts real hard....

With the light flashing ,codes are stored in the transmission control module . Have the codes check an this will tell you whats wrong . Probably a sensor or shift solenoid or line pressure solenoid .

Transmission wont shift to second gear

The vacume hose on the vacume modulater on the trans mission is nt hooked to full engine vacume or the engine isn't making vacume.The governer will make the trans shift to second anyway at redline but it's preety hard on an old car to redline it just to find out/ It's possible that youv'e got the shift detent cable that hooks to the carb set too tight or it's stuck as if it's floored. with the cable disconnected it should shift out al the way real early as long as thirs vacume on the modulater. Gas mileage freaks that drive around slowly unhook th shift cale so the trans shifts into high gear real early. Not much for passing and acceleration but they get a little bit better gas mileage.

Trans shifts very hard after 5 minutes of stop and go traffic

A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.

Some possibilties, not all!

Hard shifting starting in Drive Gear. Starting in

I agree with the suggestion to service the trans but no transX, just new fluid and a new fluid filter, if that doesn't help then you will need more seriou work.

Hard Shifting after highway driving (1997 Chevrolet Tahoe)?

The problem sounds like your kick down cable has gone bad. There should be a cable that runs from the transmission to the linkage on the TBI(i'm assuming it is a TBI[Throttle Body Injection]) At the throttle bracket, it is the lowest cable. It should have a little plastic box and you should be able to push on the button and slide the little plastic piece in or out of the box. This will adjust your shift points, being plastic, the cable likes to slip if it gets old. Also if you have book or have access to one it should tell you how to locate and check it but usually you have to replace them once they start to slip, the one I got for my 1992 was only like 28 dollars so it's not to bad just a real pain.
