Question about 1989 Ford Mustang

2 Answers

My 1989 mustang keeps popping out of first gear. Could this be the gear its self or a synchronizer? If i hold it in first it stays but it pops out if i dont hold it. also this is the only gear that this happens in. sometimes when i pops out and i put it back in. if i push it slowly it feels like the gears are grinding and stuff. Thanks a ton, John

Probably a worn synchronizer or sliding hub. Another possibility I've seen a few times is a bent shift fork. This is usually the result of abuse or excessive force being applied during hard driving. Inspect the fork and linkages carefully. If no problem found you are looking at removal of the trans for inspection on the bench & repair.

You must have a manual transmission. Rebuild it. synchronizers are bad. The reason for grinding. Then you have worn shift forks. Reason for popping out of gear. Also replace any worn bearings or just get the bearing kit and replace them all, with the races.

Change shift linkage on 93 sentra

More than likely it's not the linkage. Sounds like the fourth to fifth synchronizer is very badly worn, which will cause the shifter to "pop out" of fifth gear.

89 mustang lx ( My dash lights stay on for approx 2 minutes before the 5 amp fuse pops) Any idea ?

you have another circuit piggybackin on the dash lights, my guess is a bad ground to the parking or tail lights, try unplugging the tail lights and front marker lights. if the fuse satys good you have it

When driving normal, pops out of gear; put back in gear go a little farther, pops out again.

Does that only happen when you accelerate or decelerate? If so then this could be happening because the pilot bearing is worn out, or the synchronizer keys are no longer holding.

What would be causing gears to pop out. At first it was 3rd and 5th gears. I changed the clutch now it wont take 4th at all and 5th continues to pop out (must hold it in) 3rd doesn't pop anymore but grinds...

You probably need to rebuild the transmission, and look for gears that have been damaged, synchronizers that have failed, and worn parts in general.
The clutch has no bearing on whether the tranny slips out of gear.

I have a 1986 for mustang 5.0 with a 5 speed transmission, it won't stay in reverse any ideas?

Does it pop out of any other gears? Sounds like you lost a blocker ring or thrust washer in the tranny.

Fourth gear pops out on my 1968 beetle

4th gear syncronizer is not the problem. The detent rod is worn
and the ball can't keep it in place. Get the tranny overhauled or
get a good used.
