Can I convert my 2x4 2003 silverado to 4x4?

I can't imagine going to all that much work when buying a 4x4 would be easier and probably cheaper given the availability of 4x4 trucks.
One thing you did not mention that came to mind was anti-lock brakes.
As for the computer, a transmission with a transfer case may not work in a system without the transfer case. Not sure on that point.

Tod system on 98 bighorn check light and rear wheels flashing on dash when ingnition on and stays on not pulling front diff out of ingagement vsv are ok and work no power at them but have earth on both so...

check out detent limit switches on gear box and transfer case for continuity and open circuit when pressed(on /off switch) these are feed back signals to indicate it has locked into 4x4 or 2x4, if one of these dont work properly system locks up and wont do anything any more. also check front one on diff near actuator, common problem. check actuator is working properly when vacuum applied and removed. can remove this and bench test unit, some oil will be lost when removed for bench test and you can check colar inside diff slides back and forth to lock axle.

I just bought a 1996 Sierra 1500 and its a got a toggle switch on the dash that the guy said was for the 4x4 but it doesnt like to engage in 4x4 very well, sometimes it takes 2 seconds and sometimes it...

It's the transfer case motor.I had the same problem and replaced it, now it works great. Part is about $100.00 ( aftermarket ) .Ifyou are going to replace yourself you will have to remove front drive shaft and remove yoke from transfer case with an impact wrench for clearance to remove transfer case motor . When you put the new transfer case motor in make sure you line up slot with grove in transfer case motor. Good Luck.

I have a Ford F150 that I engaged into 4L. Now I am trying to engage back to 2H and it is not engaging back. The 4x4 is controlled from the inside of the truck. The controller doesnt feel like there is any...

The switch could be bad, but if you cannot select 4H or 2H, I would think the shift motor in the transfer case is the issue.
This is assuming when you posted "control switch be bad", that you have an ESOF ( Electronic Shift on the Fly ) system.

Some times the Shift motor in the transfer case hangs up, and tapping the back of the transfer case cures the problem. The other thing could be the connector on the transfer case is corroded, remove the connector, and check it for water and other junk, clean if necessary.

You can remove the switch from the dash, and check the resistance on it.

If you secure the truck ( chock the wheels, parking brake, etc ) and having someone turn the ESOF switch from 4L to 2H or 4H, while tapping on the transfer case, this would be a good place to start.

Stuck in 4WD low

If you have an electric shift transfer case, (little knob to change to 4x4), then the motor may have gone out. There are several fuses and relays associated with the 4x4. Check all of the fuses, replace any that are burnt out. You can not check relays, so you will have to replace them. If this does not solve the problem, then the problem could be in the 4x4 mini-computer, or the motor could be burnt out, or the transfer case could be locked up. On most ford transfer cases you can take off the bolts that hold on the electric shifter motor, and manually turn the knob that changes from 2x4-4x4. If that know will not turn with the vehicle in neutral, the transfer case may be locked up. If it is not the transfer case, look into finding a new motor for the transfer case.

Why does a 1999 Suburban Auto Transfer case not engage and not go into 4X4 or auto 4X4 and push button lights on dash do not light when the fuse is good?

The 4x4 switch on the dash likes to take a dump in those years. They also like to eat encoder motors. If you have a way of checking it, try and get the codes out of the transfer case modual. b2725 means you need a new 4x4 switch on the dash. c0327 means you need a new encoder motor. There are a bunch of other codes that can be in there. But I'll take a guess and say those will be the ones you'll see.

Oh and for what it's worth the encoder motor is the the thing on the transfer case that shifts it. It's a electric motor. And it's NOT cheap! So make sure you find out if it's really bad before you put one in.

2002 f250 transfer case that doesnt shift into 4x4

Hello , chances are the 4x4 transfer motor/solenoid on the case either has no power , or has failed. I removed mine from my 2004 Explorer , dis-assembled and replaced the nylor washer and re-assembled and she works.
