If I have across connected jumpers to batery car ignited and by negligence the ends they stick and they make sparks that damages can have it

May have caused damage to battery cells, have battery tested

No spark from coil to distrubuter


Disconnect the ignition coil output wire at the distributor cap.
Connect a spark plug to the end of the ignition coil output wire which you just disconnected.
Connect a ground wire to the threaded portion of the spark plug.
Disconnect the ignition coil ground wire from the negative terminal on the coil (Green Wire).
Connect one end of a ground wire to the ignition coil negative terminal.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Tap the other end of the ignition coil ground wire jumper on an good grounding point (for example the battery negative terminal) and look for sparks at the spark plug that correspond to the frequency of your tapping of the ground wire.
If you have a good spark at the spark plug, the ignition coil is good.
If you don't get a good spark, check for approximately 12 VDC from the coil positive terminal (black wire) to ground with the ignition switch in the ON position. You should also get approximately 12 VDC from the coil negative terminal (Green wire) to ground
Ignition Coil Resistance Check

In addition to the test above, you may elect to perform an ignition coil resistance check as confirmation of the coil's condition.

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.

You may have a bad coil or bad ground or wire connection

My 2001 ultra shut down I cranks but no spark. and the check engine light wont come on when I turn ignition on


Hi Anonymous, when checking for spark the CKP needs to measure the compression bump in order to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM so always check for spark with either a third plug grounded or lift the end of the plug boot 1/2 " off one of spark plugs that are in the head. and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.
6. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched.
7. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery connections especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends
8. Loose wire connection at coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, spark plug cable connections loose,
or cables connected to wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to faulty ignition coil, ignition module, or sensors " Manifold Absolute Pressure" "Camshaft Position Sensor" "Crank Position Sensor" "Brake Apply Sensor
11. Engine lubricant to heavy ( winter operation )
12. Sticking or damaged valves or push rod wrong length.
13. Primary cam sproket spline sheared or missing spacer.
14. Security alarm system not disarming. 1992 and later Touring Models, fuel pump fuses and relays will be behind the right side panel, starter and ignition relays will be under the seat behind the battery, everything else will be behind the left side panel to access fuses pull back on the front two locking tabs and slide the cover up. How can i make a jamper in the batery conecter system?


I believe your motherboard has only one button battery and if something has struck this board hard enough to harm the battery housing it most likely has other damage also.

Hi there,

I suggest you do a fuel pressure and volume test also.

But first, you need to ensure you have good spark. Make a spark tester by gapping an old spark plug to 0.200" and sticking it on a plug wire. Lay it on a metal ground and crank the engine over and see if there is spark. If no spark, then the problem may lie in the ignition system.

Check for battery voltage at the positive side (15) of the coil with the key on. If there is no voltage check the yellow wire from the ignition switch. If there is power there you have a break in the wire somewhere in between.

If you have power to the coil, stick your spark tester in the end of the coil wire.

Then, with the key on, hook a jumper wire to the negative (1) side of the coil and MOMENTARILY ground it. If you get a spark, then the Hall Effect sensor in the distributor is either bad or not getting power.

At this point I would recommend getting a Car Service Manual from the reference section of your local public library. It has a more detailed testing procedure for the testing the Hall Effect sensor and ignition module. It is much too long for me to describe here in this forum.

How to replace a sparkplugs for a mitsubishi montero xls 2002


    • 1 Cool the engine before attempting to remove any spark plugs.
    • 2 Remove the spark plug wires located across the top of the Eclipse model's engine. The spark plug wires connected to the spark plugs are the flat circular ends. Grab the wire around the circle and twist to unlock the wire. Lift up on the wire to remove it from the engine. Some models with ignition coils above the spark plug may require you to unhook the wire from the ignition coil to remove the wire.
    • 3 Drop the socket with the extension and socket wrench attached into the cylinder well and on top of the spark plug. Turn the socket wrench to unscrew and pull the spark plug out of the engine.
    • 4 Spray silicone spray into the cylinder well and onto the new spark plug threads.
    • 5 Insert the new spark plug into the socket with the threads sticking out. Slide the socket into the cylinder well and gently turn the wrench to the right to thread the spark plug into the cylinder head.
    • 6 Use the tension tool to test the tension or torque of the new spark plug. Set the tension to the specifications listed on the spark plug package.
    • 7 Reattach the spark plug wire to the new spark plug.
    • 8 Continue this process with the other spark plugs. Be sure to only complete one spark plug replacement at a time.

Engine Fails To Start

The "Checking For Spark'' test should be performed prior to this test.

This is a basic test of the ignition system that systematically examines the battery, the coil, the engine controller, and its wiring harness and connections; the most likely culprits in a no-start condition at this stage.

  1. Unplug the ignition coil harness connector at the coil.
  2. Connect a set of small jumper wires (18 gauge or smaller) between the disconnected harness terminals and the ignition coil terminals.

  1. Attach one lead of a a voltmeter to the positive (12V) jumper wire. Attach the negative side of the voltmeter to a good ground. Measure the voltage at the battery and confirm that enough current is available to operate the starting and ignition systems.
  2. Crank the engine for five seconds while monitoring the voltage at the coil positive terminal:
    1. If the voltage remains at zero, diagnosis of the fuel system should be performed. Also check the engine controller and auto shutdown relay.
    2. If voltage is at or near battery voltage and then drops to zero after one or two seconds of engine cranking, check the engine control module circuit.

WARNING

The ignition must be turned OFF prior to unplugging the engine controller connector. If it is not, electrical surging could occur causing damage to the unit or other electrical components in the vehicle.

  1. If the voltage remains at or near battery voltage during the entire five seconds, turn the ignition key OFF. Remove the 14-way connector on 1989 models, or the 60-way connector on 1990-96 models at the engine controller. Check the 14-way or 60-way connector for any spread terminals.
  1. Remove the test lead from the coil positive terminal. Connect an 18 gauge jumper wire between the battery positive terminal and the coil positive terminal.
  2. Make a special jumper cable (see illustration). Using the jumper MOMENTARILY ground terminal 12 on the 14-way connector (1989), or terminal 19 (see illustration) of the 1990-96 60-way connector. A spark should be generated at the coil wire when the ground is removed.
    1. If a spark is generated, replace the engine controller computer.
    2. If no spark is seen, use the special jumper to ground the coil negative terminal directly. If spark is produced, repair the wiring harness for an open circuit condition. If spark is not produced, replace the ignition coil

This procedure requires an ohmmeter to test the coil packs for primary and secondary resistance (specifications are given for an ambient temperature of 70-80°F/21-27°C).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Determine the manufacturer of the coil. It should be labeled either a Diamond or Toyodenso.

  1. Check the secondary resistance of each individual paired coil by connecting an ohmmeter across the coil towers. This must be done between the correct cylinder pairs: 3/2, 7/4, 1/6, 9/8, or 5/10. Resistance for a Diamond coil should be 11,300-15,300 ohms. For a Toyodenso manufactured coil pack, resistance should be 11,300-13,300 ohms.

  1. Check the primary resistance of the front coil pack by attaching an ohmmeter between the B+ coil terminal and either the right (cylinders 3/2), center (cylinder 7/4), or left coil (cylinders 1/6) terminals. Resistance for a Diamond coil should be 0.97-1.18 ohms. Resistance for a Toyodenso coil should be 0.95-1.20 ohms.
  2. To test the primary resistance of the rear coil pack, attach an ohmmeter between the B+ coil terminal (see illustration) and either the right (cylinders 9/8), or left (cylinders 5/10) coil terminals. Resistance for a Diamond coil should be 0.97-1.18 ohms. Resistance for a Toyodenso coil should be 0.95-1.20 ohms.

Are your battery connections clean and tight? The clicking sound indicates the solenoid is not engaging the starter motor. It could be either a bad solenoid or starter motor.

There is no spark at the plug when pulled from the engine and engine is cranked.


If there is spark with a jumper battery connected, you need a new battery. If no spark with a jumper battery connected, you need a new ignition module.

Has the 1989 starter ever been changed? To test the solenoid, use a jumper(14 Ga. wire with alligator clip at both ends). Connect one clip to + terminal (Large wire from the battery) on the starter. Do not let the other clip come into contact with anything , at this point power is present at the other clip and arcing will occur. Be careful. Disconnect small wire(usually a Black wire with white stripe) from the solenoid and move it to the side. Make sure the Transmission is in neutral and E-brake is applied to prevent runaway. Now turn ignition switch to On position. Next, touch the loose end of your jumper(clip) to the tab on the solenoid where the small black wire was unplugged from. If the starter is good, it should spin the engine and run. Nippon-Denso and Hitachi starters are prone to low voltage at the small wire(Black with White strip). If the starter does not spin with the jumper, starter must be replaced. If the jumper works, then disconnect the jumper wire and plug the small wire back to the starter. Keep the jumper in the car for future no-start conditions.
