There are olu 2 symptoms of a malfunctioning T-stat, one is the engine runs cold, most people notice this in cold weather as the heater doesn't get very hot, this is the most common, the other less common problem is the engine very quicly overheats, just a few miles in most cases from start up. if this has answered your question please let me knowe by rating it.

If your over heating the thermostat would be the first thing to change and if it's been in there longer then 5 years. Good luck and hope this helps.

Overheating is a sign, and no heat coming from the heater is another.

Compair the upper and lower radiator hose temps depending on where the thermo is. for example if the thermo is on the top of the engine block then the coolant flow will be from the bottom to the top so if the thermo is stuck close the bottom hose will be very hot and the top will b e noticably cooler. depending if it is stuck open or closed. don't rule out a retriction like a water jacket or broken water pump.

SOURCE: Where is the head gasket

Loss of power and a pinging noise while the engine is under a load are also signs of a leaking head gasket. Make sure to have the head checked by a machine shop for cracks and flatness before you reinstall it. Also this is a good time to flush the coolant out of the engine. You will need a torque wrench and the proper torque sequence with your new head gasket as well. I did this job on my Skylark (2.5 Irond Duke) and I found it much easier to remove the exhaust pipe off the manifold and disconnect all the linkage, fuel and coolant lines from the intake manifold and remove the entire head, intake, and exhaust manifold in one piece. Of course this is just personal preference. Otherwise you will have to buy all new gaskets for the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold and spend an hour scraping the old gaskets off. These engines also have a hydraulic valve train that requires torquing the rocker arms down. It is a good idea to remove the load from the rockers first before torquing. This is accomplished by cranking the engine over by hand thereby moving the camshaft to provide the maximum slack in the rocker arm your trying to torque. I torqued mine to around twenty foot pounds. Anywhere from sixteen to twenty foot pounds should be fine.

On your cooling system you are going to have 2 hoses the upper hose on the top of the radiator and a return hose that's on the bottom of the radiator. If you follow the upper hose it should be connected to a small housing that the hose is connected to.Remove the hose and housing which will expose the thermostat.
