Go to a place that sells goodyear belts. Find an old mom and pop auto parts store and they should be able to help to get a wider belt. That year model has always been hard to get the right belts for it. We used to tell the parts store to send all of the different option belts it called for and then we sent back the ones we did not need.

None of my pulleys will turn on my jeep Cherokee larado

with the belt on or off? If when off, anything not turning means the bearings are probably frozen. The units would need replacement. Its a coincidence that all are not turning at the same time. CHECK CRANK & CAMS WITHOUT THE BELT. IF THOSE ARE N/G YOUR STARTING TO LOOK AT A MOTOR REPLACE OR SERIOUS REPAIR.

Why does belt to alternator keep skeaking + snapping?

Bad bearings can usually be detected simply by turning the unloaded pulley (wheel). They feel sort of gritty compared to a good bearing. The squealing and snapping is a concern, however. My best guess would be a belt tensioning issue. Squealing is usually caused by belt slippage due to an unusually loose belt. This leads to belt damage and eventually, breakage. Of course a bad idler pulley bearing or other defective component (A/C, P/S, Alt) can cause the same results.

95 jeep grand cherokee. Alternator charges intermittently only after engine squeals, belt NOT loose.

if the belt squeals why not fix that first? ?>?????
that is correct, if a shared belt resource, is seized it will cause any belt to slip and the alternator to stall , after all they are SHARED.
some alternators do have the regulator in the ECU. for sure.
why guess, tools are cheap. wana buy a tool.>
did you hand spin all shared pulleys to feel for seizer or use a $5
stethoscope on each for load bearing noise, so simple to do...
they sell this tool called a Laser RPM tool, point and shoot.
its cheap,
The correct RPM of the ALT is publised in the FSM and you can measure it.
i take my crank pulley diameter and divide it by the alt pulley diameter.
eg: one is 8" other is 3"
so the ratio is 2.66 :1
so at engine RPM of 800 x 2.66 you have 2128 rpm on the alt.
basic mech, 101.
so if the tool shows way less than that, then bingo, the pulley is slipping, BTW2 not all slips squeal. so.... the tools rule the world of mechanics.
here is the cheap tool i use to find things with wrong RPM.
i put a dab of liquid paper (walfart) on any pulley and this tool
picks it up and bam RPM exactly.
no hands getting caught in belts etc, no danger.

so recap
belt new.
all things on the belt, feel good spun
all things on that belt , sound good $5 stethoscope.
tension on belt , at spec.
if still bad out comes Mr
DT22334A
http://www.amazon.com/DT2234A-Tachometer-chemical-automobile-airplane/dp/B00BKUNOAW

in the real world , sometimes THINGs only SEIZE on the fly.
picture in mind a dry bearing that keeps dragging more as it spins faster. bingo. its bad. and gets worse at higher RPM and soon it
will seize 100% and throw that belt or shred it.

I cant pin down where it squeels
why not drop the belt (cold engine if shared with water pump)
and now it dont squeal.
easy huh, no belt , no squeal.
i truly hope this helps.
there is no reason to guess, besides a new unglazed belt.
ever.

My 2007 avalon squeals every time I put the AC on? What should I do?

Make sure its simply not the A/C tensioner thats gone bad. You might just have to replace that one. There's absolutely no reason a belt should be the culprit unless it is tearing or ripped so you can look for wear and tear on the belts. Most likely a pulley is out of alignment or the pulley bearing is just starting to squeal when it gets wet. But it can still squeal if its dry outside.

Take the belt off and spin it with your hand, if it squeaks, its bad. I had to replace one years ago, they just go bad. Make sure the A/C compressor isn't whats squealing too, and the other top pulleys too. Sometimes you can be fooled on where the squeal is really coming from. Spin everything that can be spun, by hand.

AC Squeal

Odd,possibly the AC is overcharged,or a pulley(either tensioner or
PS ) is out of line. Wish I knew what kind of vehicle. Might help.

Belt squeals so replaced the belt and still does it.sprayed wd 40 on it and stopped for about 10 sec. and come back

do not spray any lubricant or cleaner on belts. they are rubber made.
you can use a dry soap if you can remove belt.

on 4.0 engines it can be tightened a bit. there is a bolt close to steering pump. very long bolt. it is located diagonally and it tightens the belt.

When I turn on the air conditioning it squeeks very loud. I just put in new belts. A friend said the tension is goon. How do I know if the compressor is bad

  • I would start with a can or brake clean and spray some of that on your belt as it is turning and see if there is some dirt on the belt making it squeal.
  • It can be a week tensioner. You can look with a flashlight as the belt is turning to see if you see the tension pulley is popping up and loosing tension.
  • While there with the flashlight make sure the belt is running strait.
  • A couple ways to know if the compressor is bad. First you will hear it squeal real bad or grind real bad ans you run the AC. This is an indicator of the bearings gone bad. You can also remove the belt and just give the compressor pulley a few spins. It should spin free with no hang ups or noises.
  • I would suggest that while the belt is off you spin all the pulleys to see if they spin free without any noises. Naturally the crank won't spin by hand but all the others should.
  • Also keep in mind that on rare occasions even a new belt can be bad and another new one will be needed.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

1993 Mitsubishi Diamante ES/New Parts on Engine/Alt/P/S Stretches

these acr have problems with the crank pulley, this makes the belt get loose, or theres bolts missing that hold power steering pump or tensioner on,remove the belts and take a good look at the crank pulley, the outter part of the pulley is held on by rubber, this rubber dries out and the outter pulley loosens from the inner part of the pulley causing belts to loosen and squeal,

Could it be the pulley on the AC that's squealing? Use a mechanic's stethoscope to locate the squeal. If it is the AC, you can get a belt that is shorter, and bypass the pump, since it doesn't work anyway. Try some belt dressing first. When the engine is running, just spray it on the inside of the belt.

1999 dodge durango 5.9 v8 loud squealing noise from under hood replaced tenison pulley, idler pulley, ac pulley/clutch assembley, and belt please help

You didn't mention the alternator, power steering pump, or water pump. In fact, any pulley other than the crankshaft one can have a bad bearing or dry seal. Remove the belt and spin each pulley while listening for any rough noise or squeal. If it was the crankshaft, it might be time to check the oil. Start the engine with the belt off to see if it does squeal. Make sure the noise isn't coming from the radiator fan(s).
