Peugeot 406 HDi (Diesel 2001) Revving Up/Cutting Out Problem

I have a problem with my Peugeot 406 HDi Diesel (2001). It can intermittently cut out on me while im driving. Sometimes it will start back up straight away, other times I have to wait a few minutes before it starts back up. When it cuts out, it cuts out completely - it tends to slow down quite rapidly and the power steering locks up making it hard to steer to any side and quite dangerous on busy roads. Only the brakes tend to work.
It also tends to rev up and down slightly when idle (neutral) or stuck in traffic coming up to a junction. It can then **** and cut out. Again, sometimes it will start straight away, other times I have to wait a few minutes before it starts back up again.

It has been doing this for around 7-8 months now and is very annoying and unsafe. I believe the problems above are definately related.

I have been to a few local garages and they cant find out what the problem is. They have connected up computer diagnostic equipment to it and it shows no faults or error codes.

A bit of background history:

Around 6 months ago, one day it would not start up from dead. However this was to do with only 2 Globe Plugs functioning and these were replaced completely so all 4 were working and sorted that problem out. The engine cutting out/revving up problem existed before that. The fuel pump has also been changed.

It has been fully serviced and had the fuel filter changed last week due to a recent Diesel leak but is still having the same problem.

I hear this is a common problem with Peugeot 406 cars especially but after doing various researching have never found an adequate solution.

Could this be a relay/fuse problem? If so which one and how do I locate it?

I have had feedback from someone else to say they had a simliar problem with their BMW a few years ago and it turned out it was one of the relays that needed replacing. They couldn't remember which one but it sorted out the problem?

Please assist!!!

My peugeot 206 diesel keeps cutting out, now it

In my opinion cut off problem occurs if engine is not getting sufficient fuel and/or air. Clean the air filter, turbo filter and fuel filter. Check the continuity of diesel flow from filter to hdi pump. If you haven't found any problem there then the possibily the hdi pump and injectors section needs to be checked. If the car has done more than 100000 miles then clean inlet and outlet manifolds including check of turbo and EGR valve. Do everything whatever possible before you take your car to garage. If there is no luck then let your car diagnosed and check any error code recorded by ecu.

2003 Peugot 406 Hdi Estate. Cutting out whilst driving and at idle (poss when wife adjusts driver seat). Happened a few months ago after service - suspected air in system. Wife noticed air in fuel pipe...

renew the flexible hose connections at the tank end if fitted and not a plastic pipe going straight to sender unit .Sucking in air problem is one of THEM jobs .a right pain to find 99%of the time .but any flexible rubber pipes can and do go porous with age
