Question about 1991 Oldsmobile 88

1 Answer

Security light, but no start (intermitant)

I have a 1996 Olds 88 and my wife complained that it would not start sometimes. We took it to the shop and they could never replicate the problem (typical). It has been progressively worse. When you turn the ignition, everything happens such as lights, warning lights, power on, AC, radio, but when you go to crank the starter, nothing happens. No noise, no sound, just nothing. The lights do not dim and the battery is fine (so is the starter). I figured out that it is the key code in the specific keys assigned to the car. I figured I would bypass it (as if I were changing out the ignition switch, but when I put the two white wires together, I get nothing. This really sucks because I cannot even start the car now. I will keep working on it and get back if I find something, but if anyone knows how to disable the "security" feature with the coded keys, you would solve my problem.

To correctly solve your problem you need to regretfully take the vehicle to dealership and have the computer re-promed for aftermarket ignition, ignition security not only cut off coil ignition but also fuel consumption

Why does the word security flash on the instrument panel of my 1996 olds 88? and it will not start

Because the immobiliser has been invoked. Did you disconnect the battery or have a new key made, or swapped the ignition lock out for a new one?

I have an olds 88 1996 the radio wont work. It just says lock on it. any ideas why

Call GM and tell them your problem.Every radio has a security code to reset it. If you don't have the book on the radio that is what you have to do.. They will give you the code.

My 1998 olds 88 won't start. it is not the battery or starter. The security light is flashing. when i try to start it i get nothing. lights are on and stay bright

Is probably the Pass key security system. On your main key you may have a little black raised dot. This is a resistor for the Pass system. make sure you can see a little copper line on each side of the black dot. Sometimes this gets worn or dirty and if the vehicle does not recognize the proper key, it will go into security mode and not start. I think you have to wait like 1/2 hour to try again. Had this happen to a customer of mine who had a key made at Home Depot (without the black dot). Good luck.

96 Olds 88 with 92,000 miles runs fine but security light on dash won't go off. No problem in starting. Should I do anything?

If you brought it to our GM shop, we would bypass your Pass-Key sensor to eliminate any future problems.

1996 Olds Achieva: Security light flashes upon startup

Several GM products, including the Chevrolet Impala and Malibu, the Oldsmobile Alero, the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Saturn Ion, have issues with the Security light coming on. This is many times an indication of a failing Body Control Module (BCM). Initially, the Security light will come on then go off, progressing to a constant on light, before the car will refuse to start. Other symptoms may include erratic action of electronics, a clicking sound coming from the glove box, and the air conditioning failing to blow cold air. I recommend a shop that specializes in the electronic systems of vehicles to diagnosis and make the necessary repairs. They should keep the car until they replicate the symptoms described. A new BCM from GM should cost about $230; plan on another $200 for them to diagnose the problem, replace the unit, and program the new unit. The dealers quote between $700 and $1,100 for the same repair. My experience and the experiences I have read on the internet, indicate the new BCM should last only about a year.

I have a 96 Olds Cutlass Supreme that intermittently won't start

If the lights on the dash all come on but the engine wont turn over it could be a problem with the VAT security system. Your key has a little chip on it between the teeth and the handle. This is a common problem with GMs', often just replacing the key is necessary but sometimes the VAT module needs to be replaced.

A 1994 Oldsmobile Royal 88 has a problem on the security system

ok first off let me warn you i have had this problem before but let me verify something before i finish warning you . the lights are on all the time or are you saying they have to be on to start the car?

Ok now for the warning you may not like me very good when i tell you the info that took care of my problem like that the reason being is because it is VERY expensive and may not correct your problem it helps on some of the cars with the problem and some it dont
My car has that pass key cap with the chip made into the key that starts the car itself and has a security feauture that will stop the car from starting if that key is wet, dirty or blown up( exposed to static thus blowing the chip) therre is one big differance though i have noticed on mine it done exactly what yours is but when driving or if i try to start mine in neutral the security light came on .

ok i know you are saying omg what price am i looking at and I honestly dont know since olds went out of business but before they went out it was going to cost me 800 for the chip 100 for key and 50 service fee
Now there is an alternative however to check this out and see if it is your key or not
if you have a second key try using it to start it and see if it does the same thing; if it does then its not the key but the security mechanisim inside the sterring column which means a new sterring column and possibly a new airbag system ( usually a shop Job) this security feature is nice however its alot of pain because after 3 minutes it shuts the car down completely ( the car thinks its stolen )
