Are you sure you have all the forward gears?(4speeds ,three shifts)This is a common problem with this transmission and it is almost always a broken reaction shell. The shell brakes due to a diagnostic code setting and putting the trans into a high pressure setting and braking the shell. It is possible that you have a problem n the reverse input clutches but this is rare.Eithe rway the transmission will need to be removed and diasssembled.Good luck and let me know if I can help.
No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. R&R. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.
Do you have manual 1st? If so, can you shift through the gears...i.e.
manual 1st to manual 2nd then 'D' then 'OD'??? Only 1st and 2nd gears
use the forward sprag unless the LO/Rev clutch is engaged...i.e. 1st
and 2nd if in "drive". If you can shift threw the gears manually then,
yes, your forward sprag broke.
If no manual 1st then your sprag is not what broke. Sounds like you blew up the rear planet. If you pull the pan and find chunks of iron and steel, then that is probably what happened.
If you have reverse then it is not the pump. If the pump was bad you would have no line pressure
and it would slip in rev. or no rev. Not the beef sun shell either
because you have rev., a broken sun shell would cause no 2nd, 4th and
rev. gears. Either way the trans needs to come out and torn down and it will be easily found what went. Good luck and thank you for using Fixya.
It sounds like your transmission has broken the planetary sun shell. If it has you would also have no 2nd or 4th gears. Its not a hard repair but it will be more costly if your driving your vehicle as metal will be damaging other components.
I hope this helps.
If you have forward gears in an automatic and no reverse, it is an internal problem. While the shifting is done through computer control reverse is manual. You probably have a sun shell or sun gear broken. The trans will have to come out and be repaired. Sorry, but it is probably going to cost more than a 93 is worth. That is an expensive transmission.
it sound like you broke the sun shell in the transmission.
this is pretty common with the 4l60e transmission, when the sun shell breaks you will lose reverse and fourth gear, the only remedy is to replace the transmssion or have it repaired, the repair will require the transmission be removed and disassembled, you will need to purchase a new sun shell (get a heavy duty replacement) and a papper rubber kit for the repair, the kit costs about $80.00 and the new sun shell is about $65.00, just find a good trans guy to provide the labor.
Your sun gear shell (google it) has broken in your transmission. I'm guessing you only have 1st and 3rd forward gears? I have a 98 Z-71 and have been through 3 of them. The OEM shell is junk. When you take it to the tranmission shop, tell them to replace it with a hardened shell. My local transmission shop charged about $450 (parts and labor) to change the shell only. The very first time it broke (about 65,000 miles) they went ahead and rebuilt the tranny while they had it apart. If you've never had your tranny rebuilt, I reccomend doing it while they have it apart - they probably will, too. I have the advantage of knowing my mechanic since I was born (small town). He is as honest as they come and this was his suggestion.
Since he put the hardened shell in mine, I have had no problems.
Most likely the "reaction shell" teeth are stripped. This is a common failure in the 4L60E. The transmission will need to be removed, and the reaction shell replaced. Any reputable transmission shop should be able to replace the reaction shell. They may advise you that your transmission needs to be rebuilt. Either way, it is somewhat of a costly repair.
Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
