Question about 2004 Mazda 6
Go to AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts and they will run a scan for you for free. From there you get a code and a list of possible problems that cause the check engine light to come on.

A check engine light could be anything. It is a problem with a sensor or electrical unit. The ONLY way to tell is to have a scanner put on it and run the engine codes

SOURCE: check engine light is runs ok
You can read codes without a scanner on the 1995. You have to turn the switch on the PCM (powertrain control module) which is by gas pedal near the floor under the dash. The switch is turned with a small screw driver. Get a Haynes manual or go on internet for procedure and codes. You read the flashing service engine light to get and erase codes. Or, do as other poster said, get an OBD-II code scanner for $80, or go to parts store (Advance or AutoZone will do it) and they will read the codes for you. If you use a code reader, the port (plug receptacle or DLC) is on the passenger side under dash near center of car, near floor, on other side of PCM. You have to pull off a trim cover piece to get to it. I think 1995 is the last year for reading the flashing light and all cars from 1996 on must use OBD-II scanner/reader.

Take a run into Autozone, or Pep boys, or similar big autoparts store and they will do a free code scan, to point everyone in the right direction instead of guessing, and throwing parts at it. If the fix isn't obvious after codes recorded, get back to us with code(s) and will help you out if still needed.

some time only one thing can be happen without recording fault code in the ME control unit as my experience it's do only with intermittent fault in Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve
