I HAVE A 2005 CONVERTIBLE CORVETTE. I RECENTLY WAS LISTENING TO MUSIC WITH THE TOP DOWN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS AND WHEN I TRIED TO START MY CAR IT WOULDNT. SO NATURALLY I FIGURED IT WAS THE BATTERY AND IT WAS.BUT WHEN I GOT THE CAR STARTED THE TOP WOULD NOT GO UP. I THINK I CHECKED THE RIGHT FUSE ON THE BUT STILL NO ACTION FROM THE TOP. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS TOP UP? OR IS THERE AN ALTERNATE WAY THAT I CAN GET IT UP MANUALLY UNTIL I CAN GET IT TO THE DEALER?

I checked the fuses and still no solution. I read the owners manual about manually raising the top by releasing the hydraulic pump?

    Mr Ross,

I have disconnected the battery cables several times to reset everything and still no action from the top. Do suggest anything else?

Hi...

I had a little difficulty following what you are trying to say, but I think I got the gist of it. Basically it is a crank, no start. The engine turns over fine, it just doesn't start. The first thing to do is find out what is missing, fuel or spark. You can make a spark tester from an old spark plug gapped to about 0.200". Unplug a spark plug wire, plug in your spark tester and lay it on something metal. Crank the engine and if there is spark, you probably have a fuel problem. To confirm this spray some carburetor cleaner into the intake and crank it. If it starts and runs as long as the carburetor cleaner lasts, then it is a fuel problem. At this point I would do a fuel pressure and volume test. I have a hunch it's a bad fuel pump.
The in-line fuel filter is found along the right side frame rail between the fuel tank and engine. This is the procedure for de-pressurizing the fuel system:

  1. Loosen gas cap and allow tank pressure to release.
  2. Remove wiring harness connector from any injector, then ground one injector terminal.
  3. Connect a suitable jumper wire to a second terminal, then touch the positive post of the battery for approximately 10 seconds and release system pressure.
  4. Remove jumper wires and service fuel system as required.
Before you do anything else, put in five gallons of gas in it. After sitting the fuel sender may have been damaged and giving you a false reading. I've had this happen to me a few times. Gauge says there is fuel when the tank is actually empty.

You can try this, turn off the car, disconnect the battery negative post. Wait five minutes. Connect the battery again, then see if it works this time. This proceedure resets all electronic control in the car.

Find the hydraulic pump there should be a lever that you can turn to release the hydraulic pressure so you can manually move the top.

Hi there,

Yes you are right, first of all you need to check the fuse, fuse panel is up under the dash on the drivers side. Look up under the dash and you'll see it up there on the left hand side of the drivers side.
There is no way to get it UP manually.

Thanks

Convertible top wont open where is the microswitch located so that i can test it

It's located on the lower left of the frame as you are standing facing the trunk - drivers side. You can see how the partition is supposed to press on it. Press it with your finger and listen for an audible click. Tape it in the closed position to "fool" the car and see if the top works. It may be bad, broken, or just out of position. Or your partition my need some adjustment and is not pressing the switch properly.

My 2005 sport trac basicly chokes down and won't restart. After afew hours it cranks right up! Last time was one and a half years ago ! Until today.

Clogged catalitic converters can cause this. The engine will start and run for a bit, but as the engine tries to exhaust the gases they have no where to go. And this will shut th engine down. To check remove one of the 02 sensors in front of the converter. If it runs fine theres your problem. If the converters are clogged badly, your engine will run better, but maybe not as well as it should. the reason being is that the hole for the 02 sensor is not big enough to vent all the exhaust.

LISTEN FOR HYDRALIC PUMP MOTOR OPERATION IN THE TRUNK AREA..IF YES YOU HEAR HYDRALIC PUMP MOTOR RUNNING MAKING A NOISE.CHECK HYDRALIC PUMP FLUID LEVEL BY REMOVING THE SCREW TYPE CHECK PLUG.PLACE RAGS UNDER THE CHECK PLUG.AND UNSCREW REMOVE THE CHECK PLUG. FLUID SHOULD BE 1/4 INCH BELOW THE CHECK PLUG HOLE.IF FLUID IS LOW ADD FLUID UNTIL FLUID LEVEL 1/4 INCH FROM THE PLUG HOLE.IF HYDRALIC FLUID WAS WAY LOW YOU NEED TO BLEED AIR OUT OF THE SYSTEM.MAKE SURE FLUID LEVEL CORRECT.START ENGINE AND TRY RAISING AND LOWER THE CONVERTIBLE TOP USING THE SWITCH.IF TOO MUCH AIR GOT IN SYSTEM.HAVE A HELPER WORK UP AND DOWN CONTROL SWITCH WHILE YOU MANUAL OPEN CLOSE CONVERTIBLE TOP BY HANDS BLEEDING AIR OUT OF SYSTEM.KEEP EYE ON HYDRALIC FLUID LEVEL WHILE BLEEDING THE SYSTEM..LOWER THE TOP AND TURN OFF ENGINE. BEFORE OPENING THE HYDRALIC PUMP FLUID CHECK PLUG BECAUSE FLUID WILL SPRAY EVERY WHERE..IF HYDRALIC PUMP CHECK OUT OKAY AND YOU DO NOT HEAR NO HYDRALIC PUMP NOISE.POWER IS GOING TO HYDRALIC PUMP.EITHER HYDRALIC PUMP MOTOR FAULTY OR FAULTY HYDRALIC PUMP RELAY BEST TO LET MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP CHECK IT OUT...

What a drag is is to have your vette come home on a wrecker!

It sound to me like a bad ignition switch and or connector to the switch.

Good Luck,

I have a 1991 corvette after about an hour it will shut down and wont start for about 2 hours but it will crank over will not catch

Sounds a lot like the fuel pump is overheating (first symptom of imminent failure) If when it stalls, you can't hear the pump running but there is power there, replace it.

2006 corvette convertible power top went down fine will not go back up. checked trunk lid and storage area sensors

This is so old, i'm guessing you probably fixed it by now. But anyway, I had the same problem. It started to occasionally happen after my battery died. When it did happen, I would let both windows up, then push the up button on the convertible top. The windows would go down, then the top goes up. Worked every time. Hope this helps.

There is a series of two videos addressing a very similar problem with a 1989 Corvette, first one diagnosis, second one fix. Seems like this is a not unusual problem for these older Corvettes. Check out the links.
