It was suggested to me to tighten the nut on the gear shifter. Once we did that the key came out with no problem. It was like the car never got put into "park".
    Thanks for your help.

If disco is automatic move the transfer lever from high to low box and back again firmly then the key will come out there is a safety feature on the autos to prevent the key being removed if the transfer box is not in either high or low correctly with most dicso;s the transfer shift lever is stiff. through lack of use .once it is pushed in properly the key will release it works every time and I have had four v8 autos
basically you cant remove the key because even though the gearbox is in park if the transfer gears are not fully home the park sensor on the gearbox thinks it is out of gear eg not in park so wont let you remove the key and leave the car out of gear in case it rolls away .Dan

Happens to me sometimes as well - If you leave the car in park, turn the key all the way on (without actually starting the car), shift in to drive, then back in to park, and try again. Sometimes I have to do that 2-3 times, but eventually the key comes out. Let me know if that works.

Land Rover Discovery 1998.Replaced battery car still won't start.Alarm sound goes off when we try to start the car and the anti-lock comes on.Remote not working after changing remote battery as well.

Disconnect the battery for at least 2 hours. Hold the positive and negative battery leads together for 5 minutes to ensure the car's electrical system is fully discharged.

most important part ; PUT THE IGNITION KEY IN THE IGNITION! but not switched on.

Connect the positive lead. Connect the negative lead in one swift movement. Tighten the clamps.

Leave the vehicle for 15 minutes to pair the chip in the key and the chip in the ignition lock, and reset the Engine Control Module and Immobilizer.
