I had the same problem 3 weeks ago with my 87 Toyota truck. I posted the problem here and the response I got was- On the passenger side rear of the carburetor is a cold air idle valve, it has a two wire pigtail on it, remove the valve and clean it out with carb cleaner. Then screw it back in and all should be well. I did this, not really expecting much. My truck started right up and has been idling with no problem since. Try this and also your fuel filter.

I have a 87 toyota pickup with a 22r carb engine. had some guy rebuild it, but didnt do a good job. now the truck idles rough and then shuts off. most of the times it wont even stay on. could it be the...

No. Your troubles are carburator related. Since you have no way of knowing what "some guy" did inside your carb you will likely have to take it to a shop that specializes in that kind of work. They may be able to adjust it so it works properly but it will probably have to be rebuilt again. Carburators are like a high maintenance girlfriend, very unforgiving if not treated just right. Hope this helps.

Find the EGR valve and underneath the valve there are holes, with the engine running try to open the valve by using a scredriver, the engine should die. do it a few times to clean the valve.

Rough idle warm up or cold

The carb may be able to be rebuilt but those old *** carbs where not very good to start with. The Weber application is a great one and will last a very long time you can also get a kit for a holley if you want to get more performance. The engine in your truck will last forever as you already know but it will start leaking oil on the front side of the engine. When this happens the tech will try to replace the pan gasket but the problem will be the front main seal. When this happens have the tech change the timing chain at same time and you will save a fortune.

ROUGH IDLE

You have rust particles in the float bowl. The easiest thing to do is remove the side cover of the carb (the thing that unbolts, with a sight-glass on it) and spray carb cleaner into the float bowl until it is clean.
