I have a 2002 pt cruiser. I had a used motor installed in it and less than 2000 it starts over heating. After changing the thermostat I was told that the head gasket was blown. I had the same shop that put the motor in to replace the head gaskets and put in a new radiator. The car ran ok without overheating for about a week, then I could hear the coolant bubbling in the reservoir. I had the coolant system checked for air. 2 weeks later the car ran hot but the gague mostly stays in middle. It finall

I think the head gasket has blown again. If the head was not skimmed correctly or installed correctly it will blown the gasket again. The fact that the water is bubbling in the reservoir but the gauge staying in the middle means the water is not actually boiling but venting air/gas from the cylinders to the water reservoir. Check for a whitish grey substance in the inside of the oil filler cap indicating water getting into the engine oil. Also with start up - the engine will misfire badly but improve after a while. Take it back to the mechanic as he should guarantee his workmanship.

The thermostat problem caused overheat, because overheat your head gasket maybe broke up and leak,
1. check the tail pipe see if there is steam blow out.
2. check the oil cap,see if there is steam white bubbles

If you got, that probably your gasket broken.

3. put a piece of cardboard in the front of the engine, open the radiator cap. fillup water.

4.start the engine and let's run at least 30 minutes, see whether it overheat or not.

5. check the radiator water, see if it is circling. if it is not circling, probably the water pump doesn't work.

6. you will find out whether leak or not.

The cheapest way to stop engine gasket leaking, if it is not too big, go to parts store get a bottle of good stop leak and try it. sometimes you can stop the leak area. good luck. Frank

How do I change thermostat in 2002 pt cruiser?

The thermostat housing is the part ton the engine that the upper hose is attar he'd to. Remove the housing and the thermostat will be behind it. A t10mm socket is usually all you need.

2002 pt cruiser overheating was told i need a new raditor and thermostat for 1 grand sounds fishy

Flush rad & change coolant & thermostat. Check operation of rad fan, & make sure it is coming on when engine reaches normal operating temperature. Be sure to bleed air out good when refilling rad/cooling system. Start engine & turn heater on when refilling & let rad fan come on & off at least 2 or 3 times before putting cap back on rad, and refill rad as needed as you do this. then fill return bottle to proper level & see what happens.

Change the thermostat on 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Hi, i have put together a step by step guide that will help you with this replacement job. Make sure the vehicle is in a cool state before starting this job.

* Drain some coolant into a clean container until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
* Remove the upper radiator hose connection from the thermostat housing.
* Loosen the housing bolts and remove the housing.
* Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If the gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably bea coolant leak after reassembly. Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
* Compare the size of the thermostat to the old one. They are of different sizes, types, and temperature ratings.
* The temperature rating is stamped on the sensing bulb on the bottom of the thermostat. The temperature bulb faces the block.
* When replacing a thermostat, be sure that the thermostat fits into the groove in the block or outlet housing. If the thermostat is installed upside down, the engine will overheat.
* Install the gasket.
* Reinstall the thermostat housing. Refill the system and run the engine or pressure test to check for leaks.
* When the engine has reached operating temperature make sure the thermostat opens.
* You should be able to see coolant circulating within the radiator.
* Another way of checking thermostat operation is to feel the top of the radiator hose or use a thermometer or multimeter with a temperature probe to confirm that the coolant is warming up.
* If the engine is overheating, but the top hose is still cool to the touch, the thermostat is stuck closed and must be replaced.

NOTE
When a paper gasket is used and the recess is in the thermostat housing, it is a good practice to position the thermostat into the recess and glue the gasket to hold it in place. If it falls out of its groove during installation, the outlet housing can be cracked or a coolant leak will result. Before tightening the water outlet housing, try to rock it back and forth to be sure it is flush. Housings are often cracked during this step.
