The object on top of the intake is the throttle body. Are you getting power to the injectors, and a ground signal from the engine computer ? ?

I agree with emissionwiz, pump may be making noise but I suspect little or no pressure getting produced. Would take a shop 10 min. to attach fuel pressure gauge & confirm.

SOURCE: will start when you put gas in carb but will not run (has new pump and filter)

Check all the wire connection on the throttle body, the throttle position sensor may not be sending the proper signals to the ECM which controls the fuel injector. Here is a link to retrieving the DTC codes which i hope can help you get your serra running again.
Good luck and hope this helps. http://www.articlealley.com/article_48352_31.html

SOURCE: have a 98 yukon hard starting

THIS IS A EVER SO COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE VEHICLES. THE FUEL PUMP HAS A BUILT IN CHECK VALVE WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THE FUEL FROM RETURNING TO TANK AFTER SITTING. WHEN THE FUEL RETURNS TO TANKYOU WILL EXPERIENCE AN EXTENDED CRANK TIME. THE PUMP COMES AS A COMPLETE UNIT ON THIS MODEL AND IS FAIRLY EXPENSIVE(250.00 OR SO) HOPE THIS HELPS AND DONT FORGET TO REPLACE INLINE FUEL FILTER AS WELL!!

Testimonial: "thank you D... so once it's running the pump works fine.. you think just the check valve therefore needing a new pump altogether..?"

SOURCE: 2001 gmc sierra 1500 not getting fuel

remove fuel line from throttle body and have someone try to start. If no fuel is "shooting" out of line, there is a block. clean out line or replace.

Engine stalled out, would not start, pour gas in carb, cranks, keeps running, until idle falls below 12to1500rpm,than stalls out again and will not crank, repeat gas or starting fluid in carb, cranks runs and...

This truck is fuel injected, the problem sounds like a weak fuelpump, it runs when you pour gas into it until that gas runs out, the first thing is to test the fuel preasure, if the pump is weak it may run with gas poured into it but wont idle, also a common problem is the coolant temp sensor and the ground wires to thermostat housing bolt but i wont bet its the pump inside the fuel tank, if you put a fuel gauge on it there should be at least 55-61 psi if its a few pounds lower it can cause problems, you have everything else and it runs with gas poured so its a fuel problem check the preasure, theres a valve up top on the fuel line to connect a fuel gauge to it, start there hope this is helpful.

Not starting...fires only when gas poured into carb...gas not getting to carb from tank?

i would check the site glass on the front of the carb to see if their is fuel in the carb . the glass should be about half full of fuel. if not i would check the gas lines and fuel fillter. if those are all in working order then i would check the operation of the fuel pump.( on the 83 it is a mechanical fuel pump on the front of the motor. easy to change . two bolts and three fuel lines .

My 1993 GMC 1/2 ton truck stopped suddenly and will not start.

The inline will not work,it can not get fuel threw the fuel pump in the tank, the fuel tank has to be removed, and the fuel pump changed out.

Truck will crank and then shut off

You will need to do your testing while the vehicle is in failure to start mode.Check wether the coil is recieving 12v and pour a little fuel down carb to see if it wants to run.If pouring a little fuel down carb makes the car try to fire up you probably have a fuel pump issue. If it doesnt try to fire you have an ignition problem.Hope you get it sorted and good luck.
