Question about 1999 Lexus ES 300

1 Answer

When I turn the key in my Lexus ES 300 the dashboard lights up, but it won't start. For the past month, I would turn the key and the dash would light up and do nothing, but if I tried turning the key again, it would then start. Now it won't start at all. Three weeks ago, I tried turning the key and none of the lights were on, so I had the battery charged at Autozone. They completely charged the battery and the car was fine. Now two weeks later, it won't start at all?

Hi mlbscouting, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Have you checked the alternator? Voltage should be at least 14vdc with engine running.

The most likely problem is your alternator, the alternator charges your battery while the engine is running, if the alternator is bad you have a dead battery, but you can check with a volt meter to ensure that is your problem. Start your car (use a battery charger or jump to start it if you need to) and put your meter on the battery post's. If your reading 13volts or so your alternator is working and maintaing voltage, however if your reading starts dropping to 10 or less(may take a few moments to drop) then it's probably your alternator. You can also check your battery's voltage before starting your vechile, if the voltage increases after you start the vechile then it seem to be charging. Alternators can be repalced somewhat easily, it's only two boltsm however you do have to remove the fan belt, and re-route after installing the new alternator. If you have some expirence working on cars you can do this yourself in your driveway.
Good luck

Here's a start for you, hope this helps

SOURCE: 92 lexus es300 knock sensor

Need to remove the upper and lower air intake manifold.  There are two knock sensors for the front and rear pistons banks.  If you plan to do this yourself it is about 1 to 2 hours.  While you are at it, there is a short coolant bypass hose sitting in the same spot, replace it.  Another problem with the knock sensor is the wire harness used to connect the two knock sensors into one connection sometimes wears out and contacts the metal on the engine causing false signals to the ECM, so replace this cable also.
Just did this last summer on my 99 ES300.  Pretty easy.

your ignition switch is going bad. The pieces inside the ignition get worn out, eventually it will lock up and you will not be able to move the key.

Are you saying the engine cranks but won't start, or the engine won't crank ?
If the engine does not crank, you would check for voltage at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch as well as the ground connections.

Replace the dashboard lights

This will sound crazy but it has solved the problem more times than you would believe: give the dash board a and area around it a good wack with your fist. Often the connection to the light is what starts to fail not the bulb.

Warning light of little car with beams lit up on dash, what is it

Your Brake Lights.
I bet if you press your brake down when your car is running, the light will come on again.
I think there is a malfunction with my car because that light comes on, but there is no problem with the brakes.
You really don't have to worry about it unless your brake light(s) are broken.
