Thank you. Is it ok to continue to safely operate the car until I can get it check out at a repair shop? My son is driving the car and has at least a 2 hour trip before he is home? He says that 1st gear is real slow but driving on the highway is no problem.

Thank you for your question hope this helps
On the bright side, the fact the green indicator light came on indicates it is an transmission electrical problem rather than a mechanical one. you will need to pull the code that turned on this light on
When the A/T control unit senses an abnormality in the input or output systems, the indicator light in the gage assembly will blink. However, when the Service Check Connector, located to the lower right of the glove compartment, is connected with a jumper wire, the indicator light will blink the problem code when the ignition switch is turned on.

connect the two terminals of the Service Check Connector together. Then turn on the ignition switch and observe the indicator light.
Problem codes 1 through 9 are indicated by individual short blinks, Problem codes 10 through 15 are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blink equals 10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the problem code. Let me know what code you get and I can tell you what it means.
post back with the code you get and i can help you with the problem
If you don't think you can perform the self-diagnostics yourself, then I would recommend taking it to a Honda Dealer and let them diagnose and repair the problem.
There is a Technical Bulletin issued by Honda that may apply to your vehicle as well.
it is a problem with the TCM

  • Starts in 3rd or 4th gear
  • light on, but not blinking
  • No codes in computer (A/T control unit)
  • Shifter interlock control unit buzzing

If you are seeing any of these problem's other then the light, there is a modified Transmission Control Unit (TCM) that will fix the problem. A Honda Dealer will be able to fix you up with the correct TCM. at in some cases no cost to u as it may be a factory defect

A green key shaped light is flashing on the dashboard. What does it mean?

The green key flashing means that the key you are use is not registered to the car. If you just cut a new key for your car(it has to be a honda key, not a walmat key) your honda dealer will have to program it to your car. If it's a old key, maybe the chip in the key might be bad, time for a new key. good luck.

7.3 hard to start then runs bad. put it gear and i have no power i mean no POWER.

Hello! I suspect a defective Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor...Located under hood, center, rear engine area, mounted on the upper firewall...Three pin connector...Wire colors...Brown/White...Light Green/Black...And Gray/Red...It can be tested if you have a voltmeter...Push a safety pin into the rear of the in place connector on the Light Green/Black wire...Another pin into the rear of the connector on the Gray/Red wire...Set meter to read 5 volts...Place +probe of meter on the Light Green/Black and - to Gray/Red...Turn the key to on...Should read 4 volts...If voltage is 3 volts or less the MAP is defective...This part is called "the fuel boss" and will give the symptoms the vehicle has...Cost is around $100...See picture of MAP below...Guru..Saailer

Xzara wont start, ive fitted a new battery but the power seems to be sucked away and the dashboard lights go off

To do this means a serious amp-drain. Two main components can cause this, starter motor or altenator.

***If you are going to examine this area ensure you remove any jewelry including a watch. You could potentially earth out using say a wedding ring, the ring will hit very high temprature instantly.***

To be honest, the fault will be quite invisible and requires a technician to do some checks but try this first -

Put the car in gear and rock as much as you can backwards and forwards, it could be the starter has jammed, this may free it. Then take out of gear and try to start.

D4 gear lights ( dashboard ) starts blinking even I'm using other gears

The D4 light blinking is the vehicle computer telling you there is a transmission malfunction and transmission codes are stored in the computer's memory. The codes have to be pulled out manually unless it has an OBD2 connector.A transmission shop or Honda dealer can pull the codes.
