Ensure that all systems are off when hooking battery back up or you have a short or a pinched wire always recheck latest work and dont assume something else is wrong
always refer to your owners manual if you dont have one the manufactuar prob. does, just phone the ford/merc/lincon comp. and they will send you what you need.
Have the battery terminals checked - sound like a loose battery terminal. As u go over a bump it can cut out the engine then u dont have a good enough contact to run the starter. Get someone to try to crank as you wiggle the battery leads if it cuts the lights on the dash intermittently theres your prolem. Also check the ground wires to the motor.

if your firing order is wrong the engine will misfire while you try to crank, if you dont have spark the problem can be in the ignition module or the distributor pick-up coil itself , which is inside the distributor, first replace the ignition module. it is not very expensive.
