Question about 1995 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

Transmission 95 windstar

Have added 2qt over past 3 days. Not seeing leak on ground. Slips. rpms go up but no power behind it revs and once gets up to speed is fine. Seems like sometimes the break and gas is on at the same time. Is it a bad seal or what?

If it was a bad pump seal your driveway and road would be covered, if you overfilled your transmission you will know within 300 miles as your internal clutch disks will start burning up and you will have metal shavings and a burnt smell to your transmission fluid. An old shop trick for a little extra life is to add about 1 ounce of brake fluid to your transmission fluid for 1 this will help your seals/gasket to swell slightly potentially stopping minor leaks and another it changes the fluid density/viscosity sometimes allowing your slipping clutch disks to catch where they otherwise wouldn't. Short and not so sweet take your car at your earliest convenience to a reputable transmission shop for diagnosis and repair or you may be stranded sooner than you think. Also you said it feels like the gas and brake are on that could be a transmission vacuum/pressure modulation issue which would effect the transmission shifting at the appropriate speeds. Please get your vehicle checked soon...I will give you any other further advise that I can but this cannot be properly diagnosed without actual inspection. Let me know how this works out for you

95 accord v-tec was slipping when warmed up put a used tranny in and did the same thing then the next day it wont even go anywhere in drive revs like it is in neutral surely it not two trannys with the...

is this a transmission question
the A/T will not do what.
there are like 100 faults symptoms on any A/T
tell what it does right and wrong?

my guess is all forward gears and reverse are dead
and sure it slips, if in 1st gear or REV.and ar dont move
and engine is at 3000 rpm ,its slip city
this transmissing is shifted electronically
the Model of the tranny ends in E, means that.
so the first test (all this ever word is in the FSM under slips)
you see if the TCM (tranny brain) has errors stored.
that is in the FSM. (factory service manual)
most old cars with TCM have flash codes for engine and tranny separate. so do that.
you do know the transmission must be perfectly grounded
or the TCM will not be able to send commands to the trans , right?
seen many cars with the Factory trans ground strap missing. too many.
if the TCM is happy, we then make sure that
the shift solenioid lines have the correct logic, to get in to say
drive or Reverse (you pickone,)
then measure it with a voltmeter, (all this is in the FSM)
make 100% sure the voltmeter neg. lead id ground to the transmission casing (so i can see the ground fail)
i take my 3 or 4 readings, for each sol. line.
and say they all pass. 0v,. 0v , 12v test. that means
the TCM has told the Trans what to do,
if it trans slips the trans is bad or the clutch is dry or bad.

in fact, ive made up a switch box with toggle switches,
that plugs in to the tranny and and shift it like a manual trans, all day long. 1 switch for each sol. line
100% sure way to prove what end is bad. TCM or gear box.

ask questions.

Replaced 2 3 sol in trans goes forward in all gears

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

How do you change a first-second gear solenoid on a 95 ford windstar transmission? When shifting from 1st to 2nd the van jerks and makes a loud clunk and revs up to 4000 to 5000 rpms before shifting

ITS NOT A SOLENOID THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM THERE IS A CLUTCH PISTON THAT IS BAD THEY MADE THEM OUT OF ALUMINUM AND WOULG CRACK THE NEW REPACEMENT IS MADE OUT OF STEEL

You'll probably have to change the clutch plate on the flywheel. You'll have to get a floor jack, but a transmission jack is easier to remove the transmission. To remove the transmission you'll have to remove the tortion bars on both front wheels. Also, you'll have to remove the crossmember aft of the transfer case. You'll also have to remove the front and rear drive shafts. The manual says you should keep the transfer case from leaking oil out the back. but, you can just top it off after you're done. Be careful not to damage the seal seal for the rear drive shaft. Anyway, once you get the transmission and transfer case out (you'll have to remove the shift and transfer case levers), you should have enough space to remove the clutch plate from the flywheel on the engine. You should have an alignment tool to make sure the clutch plate is aligned with the crankshaft so you can put the transmission back on.

95 honda accord: rpm's increased well the mph decreased

Assuming you meant "RPMs Increased as speed decreased." This is usually referred to as a "slipping" condition in an automatic transmission. It's much like when your clutch wears out and it starts to slip. THe engine revs up and you go slower! Especially driving up hills since the load is greater on the powerplant. You should be darn sure you are full of Trans. fluid. Check it properly like your manual describes. If you are in the operating range of fliud level, your transmission is likely going out. If this sounds like your problem, take the car to a qualified service center, not the local quickie oil-change outfit, for an expert opinion.
