Most parking brake pedals work with a dog and pawl , much like a row of saw type teeth that have a small pivoting stop which catches in the teeth to lock down the pedal. If the pivot does not fully engage to teeth because of dirt or rust the pedal will return to its original position. This may also happen if the release cable in not fully returning. You can try pushing on the release handle rather than pulling and see if your pedal now locks in place. You can lube these parts with a can of spray lithium grease but be sure to protect your carpet and pedals so they do not get stained or become slippery. Mask areas off with newspaper or cardboard. Work the pedal and release cable a few times. It will usually free up any binding parts. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: brake lights stay on till the pedal is pulled back not the switch I replaced it

Some poor soul will have to get upside down under the dash and spray wd-40 on the brake linkages. If it doesn't free up you could check to see if the master cylinder is sticking, or maybe the push rod from the power brake booster is sticking. Get the Chilton's book on your GMC to see what is where, and any hints it may have.

SOURCE: My parking brake light keeps

have you checked the fluid level? Make sure that the master cylinder is full of fluid and that there aren't any puddles of brake fluid under the vehicle. If there are no leaks and the fluid level is ok, I would have to guess that the brakes were not properly and/or completely bled of air. If it feels as if there are no brakes at all then I would have to think it may not have beeen bled period. All 4 wheels, in this case, should be thoroughly bled.

SOURCE: parking brake pedal will not

the latch assembly either broken or stuck open
I have successfully lubricated some and they started working
there is a little latch that holds the teeth in the park brake assembly you have to gain access to see this latch and see if it is struck or simply broken

Hope this helps, it it does please leave feedback and vote Thank You and Good Luck

SOURCE: brake light stays on after

Check the parking brake cable to make sure it is moving freely and allowing the brakes to completely release when you pull the release lever. Sometimes dirt and rust will lock the cable. In this case, the parking brake pedal will still sit on the switch even though it is unlocked because the spring can't pull it and the cable back to the off position.

Brake light won t turn off at dash fluid full

That light is also tied in with the parking brake, with the key and light on pull up on parking brake pedal to see if light will go off, assuming you have a good brake pedal & not a mushy feel then it's doing it's job telling you have a hydraulic issue in the system. The switch for the parking brake is mounted on the mechanism and a single wire to it,works off a cam with pedal pushed down switch grounds the circuit.

How do i fix my Chevy Cobalt. Floor shifter stays stuck in park postion. I am pressing brake pedal and pushing the shifter button.

have a helper. tell him to press brake pedal. you come to back of vehicle and see if the brake lights work when helper press the pedal. if lights don't work the tail light fuse has blown. so you cant take from park. and on some brands if horn fuse blown you cant take from park.

1991 Cadillac 409 engine won't shift out of Park

Lets start by checking your brake light switch.
Your car has a switch on the brake pedal that not only makes the brake lights come on, but also tells the transmission it can shift out of park.
This really may be 2 separate switches, but should be under the dashboard and both should "open" when you push the brake pedal down.
Take a good flashlight and look.
The switches are small, about the size of your thumb, and both should have 2 wires attached to them.
Be blessed.

My 1998 mercury sable won't come out of park but

That happen to me, and A guy helped me. The problem maybe down by the brake pedal, but above the brakes you may have pulled the wires a loose with your feet, or something and the wires need to be put back together maybe with black electrical tape. Definitley have to go down to the floor, and look under where the brake pedal is.

Brake lights stick on

It sounds like the brake light switch down on the brake pedal is stuck and it needs replaced,Its got like a push button setup when you apply the brakes the brake pedal pushes the brake switch button in brake lights come on and when you relase the brake pedal the button on the switch comes back out and brake lights go out but if switch is worn out or sticking the lights will stay lit even when off the brake pedal so just replace the brake light switch down on the brake pedal.
