Start car, press brake as hard as you can, then push button on shifter while pushing down on shifter while pulling back all the way to neutral. let run for a few in neutral and then push back in park. Car must be on in order to get out of gear no matter what. If this does not work pull cover off shifter and push emergency release button.

My 1998 vw beetle wont shift into drive y

Brake light switches were an issue with VW. It is possible that the brake switch malfunctioned and not allowing the shifter lock to release. Make sure your brake lifts work. If they do then the issue may be in the shifter lock.

Replace the shift lock solenoid whichis located by the shifter inside the truck. It keeps the shifter locked in place until you press the brake pedal to shift

Car starts fine just started this problem, can't depress button on floor shifter to get out of park. unless physically remove the park shift release cover on the side of the shifter and depress the white...

This car has a lock out device as all vehicles have. You need to depress the brake firmly to shift into gear as you may know. The solenoid that retracts the lock out for the shifting is at fault and needs to be replaced. You will see it if you remove the entire top of the shifting console

I have a 1990 toyota p/u 4x4 automatic. It stuck in park. Will not release to drive. What is solution

Repair the shift lock mechanizm (either the linkage or an electrical issue) or to get by, use the shift lock release which is typically a small hole next to the shifter that may or may not be marked as the shift lock release. Place a key or the like into the hole to release the shifter from park.

Automatic shift has trouble getting into gear

If you have spilled any coke or coffee on shifter it will cause the shift lock actuator to stick if you have floor shifter. You will have to remove center console to clean. If nothing has been spilled shift lock actuator needs to be replaced.

Unable to shift from park into drive

there is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you step on the brake pedal.there is by the shifter a little tab that can be popped out with a small screwdriver, and using your key,put into the hole and the mechanical device will release the shifter.
it is called a shift lock override

Shift lock light stays on in drive

sounds like something might have gotten into the shifter mechanism. several things could get in there like the accordian strip around the shift handle, coffee or soda could be spilled in there,....ext. another possibilty is the shifter cable going bad . I'd disconnect the shifter cable from the tranny and see if it all moves free then, if not any better take apart the shifter itself and see whats making it hang-up.
