Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. If fuel pressure is too low, or if performance is lost under load, replace the fuel filter. If the problem persists, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

Sounds like a fuel supply problem. The fact that it does momentarily start, indicates its not an electrical issue. However, no steady fuel supply to the injectors and it won't run for more than a second or tow. Your problem is in the fuel delivery system most likely. Either the pump, or (if the unit is located in the fuel tank) the fuel filter may have ruptured. That would sent all the fuel back to the fuel tank not to the injectors.
Most Fords have a fuel reset button. When you ran out of gas you tripped the circuit. Most of the time the button will be on the passenger side by the kick panel. The exact location should be in your owners manual or your local library or auto parts store will have a copy of one for your specific vehicle.
Backfire is a result of too much air,not enough gas.You need to look at the air system, possibly the O2 sensors, air filter,or some sort of fuel:air mixture control.
Check the charging system13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts at the battery when running and lights and blower fan on high.Check the battery connections, that they are clean. The fuel pressure maybe low, check the fuel filter, and the fuel pressure to see if the fuel pump is weak.
Any repair shop can look up the time in the labor manuels for you. If you have a couple days and enough tools do it your self. The main issue is how did you test for a bad pump and is that your problem??
