Question about 1988 Ford F 150

1 Answer

My truck almost burned up today when an electrical fire broke out under the dash. Imediately disconnected the battery had it towed home. Then proceeded to find out what happened. I found out wires coming from the ignition switch were burned up to the firewall connector. The switch seems to be frozen will not slide. I need to replace the switch and female connector. Can I get these at the dealer or after market? Thanks. ps. the truck is a 88 f-150. My name is BIll.

We suspect an intermittent electrical connection that drops voltage to the fuel pump. Likely at a point where the major electrical wiring harness cables plug together under the hood near the battery. Open the connections and inspect the joints that look like an overheated joint like the plastic carrier plug showing heat stress around the plug connections.

Battery Light still on

The new alternator is probably ok.
I would say you burned a fuseable link in the wiring harness.
The alternator has a fuse wire between it and the battery to protect it from overload.
Have someone check the wires coming out of the back of the alternator. The big wire should have battery voltage, the small wires energize the alternator when you start the engine.

If it's something electrical you can try to reset the computer in in and see if that works. I do this by disconnecting the battery for about an hour and my cars are reset. Good Luck.

I'd first check for wiring/fuses - make sure all electrics work. If I'm not mistaken, car has a cabin filter that might need changing. I don't think vent/leave is the issue.

The wire goes through the gear shifter and comes out the bottom under the rubber flex on the column, the wire tends to break there( orange covered wire} . You can try to fix it or replace shifter arm, there is a disconnect on the left side of column you will need to remove plastic cover upper and lower pieces they pry apart. Trace orange wire back to disconnect.

Transmisson switch or fuel pump wires and most likey fried the computer reversing diode destroys the computer instantly. Do Not drive it. Have it towed Or it could Catch fire and burn up, aso be sure that the battery is not hooked up. It may have cookded the starter too but don't know for sure.

Lincoln digital dash electrical problem

You can take the car to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan.

If you happen to need a digital dash, you can get one at a Salvage yard. Since you mentioned burned wiring, your car insurance may cover some of the repair under fire insurance. Give them a call.

Most likely since the A/C and radio worked, they are okay. The failure could be the dash display.
