Did this start after a dead battery? What engine? It likely need the throttle valve adapted.

VW in there bright idea. If you try to start a beetle with low battery voltage it erases the memory in the computer for the throttle adaptation. You will need to take it to a dealer to have this reset. I've purchased software to try to do this but nothing works. I have a few customers that drive these and a few have had this problem. This was a dumb move for VW. How do you know you have a dead battery unless you try to start it. But if the battery voltage is below 8 volts when you hit the start postition it erases it.

SOURCE: 98 vw beetle will idel won`t take gas speed hand

If you are saying that your bug idles but stalls when you push the throttle, then look to replace your MAP sensor. This MAP sensor increases gas flow as you push the throttle down which increases the air flow. Also get an OBD2 reader and get your error codes from the ECM system. Not as hard as it sounds. When you get the codes you can look them up or ask at the auto parts store.

Replaced COIL pack!!!!!!!!!
Returned to Advance auto to clear codes---
NO CHECK engine light --runs like new
Believe the COIL pack went bad causing the sensor to clog and go bad--Probably could have just cleaned it.

98 vw beetle misfiring after rain. New plugs, coil cas cracks????

Yes, this will allow for the energy being generated to the plugs to release onto anything close enough to give it a ground. I found a website that said to remove it and coat it with liquid steel 2 part epoxy. I did that on m y '98 Beetle and worked very well for about another year. These coil packs are a POS and VW knows it, but will do nothing to resolve the issue. I did see where they recalled all 2001 & 2002 VW's to replace them, but did nothing to acknowledge the previous years, which are of the same caliber.
