It's a Ford.. what can I say? You need to 'isolate' this hissing noise to a particular part/component or assembly to/from the engine... then we can go from there.

Hissing sound on startup

A hissing noise is an indication of a vacuum leak ( probably in the manifold ) as I think as the manifold heats up the noise is lost because the gasket is now sealing off

My 1992 Jeep wrangler has a hissing noise coming from the back of the steering column and is having trouble shifting

Normally a hissing noise when the engine is running is a vac leak.
I'm not aware of anything behind the speedo that would be affected but you might check for vac hoses. Might be the power brake booster leaking vac but that is in the engine compartment.

Hissing noise coming from the rear of the car. I

probabbly not the brakes, maybe the tires but u need to check that, if u hear that noise with the engine running it might be a burned out gasket on your exhaust line
hope this helps

Car hissing sound

The noise maybe the p/s pump fluid return,GM had some problem with this but nothing bad. GM makes a resticter that goes in the return line of the pump, it will slow the fluid down going back in the pump stopping the hissing sound.

Brakes hissing noise

does it sound like its coming from behind the dash? If so your hissing noise is probably from a faulty brake booster.
