Question about 1994 Honda Civic

High Pitch humming noise in a 94 Civic

I just got this car. It's been sitting for 3+ years. Battery is a dead cell - it barely got me home.

There is this high pitched noise coming from the very very front corner of it. It's constant - doesn't stop at ANY time while the car is running. Whatever it is, it's right behind the washer fluid reservoir. It's not the power steering pump - that works fine.

It has been wrecked in the same area that the noise is coming from. Not very bad, the bumper is mesed up and the blinker is broken. Other than that no frame damage and nothing is pushed back out of place.

Help?

The alternator is in the back closer to the firewall.. This noise is coming from right underneath the power steering pump and right behind the windshield washer fluid reservoir

oh, and I doubt it's the alternator. I jumped the car after it had been sitting 3 years and when i took the battery cables off 5 minutes later it didn't cut off. That tells me the alternator is working fine - esp since it went 30 miles down the road on a battery with no charge.

Sounds like the bearing in the alternator is shot. take the belt off the alt. start car if it stops replace alt.

May well be. You might want to check your coolant. If you're low (but not yet overheating) your fan will come on more often.

I wonder if you have a fan belt that is screeching? They get glazed over and eventually wear out and make a high whine and screeching noise. This might...be what it is

Electrically speaking: If you have a "battery gauge" it would be reading outside of 13-14 volts. If you have a light it will be on.

Mechanically speaking: You would hear a low humming sound

Speaking symptoms: When you drive the lights get dimmer as you go

I would grease the wheel bearings and also use lube all the brake parts and use cleaner on them. Check the thickness of the pads.

try checking the tension on all the belts(fan/water pump, power steering, alternator). If loose, they'll whine.

Check your power steering fluid level, and system for leaks. May be a bad p/s pump as well. Hope this helps

Have you had the water pump replaced yet? Could possibly be the water pump making noise because it's about to go.
