Overheating-shuts off on the slightest grade

The first time I sat with vehicle turned off for 1/2 hour-car started and continued to run perfectly the rest of the day. NEXT day drove about 15 min. and it shut off on a slight grade. After about 2 hours I gave-up.next day it started right up and I drove away.I now notice an increase in temperture to about 230 degree's while sitting in traffic.I'm going to change the thermostat and hope that helps.

Thermostat should help but make sure fuel line isn't too close to heat source (engine or exhaust). This can perk your gas.

Check your timing. Your timing chain may have "jumped". They usually do that as you are shutting the vehicle off. Turn the engine over until the timing mark on the crank is at 0 on the pointer. Pull the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointed. It should be on #1. If it is a long way off, like on the other side then rotate the engine 1 complete turn and check then.

=1995 volvo road tractor symptom [engine shuts down] code; active, engin e, intake, air, tmp, short,+v

I recently came across a similar situation in a isuzu that took some time to diagnose. What if eventually turned out to be one injector had an intermittent failure and it too out 2 other injectors and the engine shut down. If the vehicle sat for 1/2 hour it restarted and ran again for sometimes days before the fault again appeared. It was tracked down by running the truck on a chassis dyno under load and when the fault appeared each injector was disconnected until the faulty one was revealed. If these symptoms parallel yours I suggest you point the mechanic in that direction .

You need to find out what the error code is - Service engine soon means an error code was generated.

With the problem you discribed, it sounds like a coil problem. If a crack has developed in the casing, the crack size changes with temperature changes. Also make sure that the wires are in good shape.

I have a 98 chevy cavalier and when i turn it on my engine fan spins but then stops.. but i have seen other car when they started the engine their fan keep up spining. why does my car does that?

is your car overheating???the fan isnt suppose to run when started(unless engine is hot), it may turn on then shut off. See if it runs when the vehicle gets hot and the A/C is on. Those engines with fans that move all the the time are belt driven. This is why they spin continually.

This sounds like a problem with the ignition switch. You should get this examined ASAP.
