I put large hose clamps around exhaust shields that have cracked or rusted thru. Easy fix to do. You can put 2 clamps together to make a bigger 1.

Usually it is a loose rusted exhaust heat shield or shields.
Slide under and tap the exhaust system and shields from front (on the engine )to back.......there will be at least one rattle heard.

SOURCE: loose heat shield

Most likely it's a heat sheild on the converter, maybe the muffler. 1 on top and 1 on the bottom. The heat sheild is welded to the converter, over time they rust away, around the welds. You can use a large diameter worm gear clamp to keep the heat sheild from rattling. The sheilds are in place so if you drive over grass, the heat from the converter won't ignite the grass.

Honda civic 03 1.6 petrol has intermittent rattle; ~2000rpm in 2nd, ~3000rpm in 5th, UK sites suggest EGR valve malfunction or blockage; engine runs OK otherwise, power fuel consumption normal

Engine rattle?Remove the metal heat shield at the front/top of the exhaust and check the exhaust manifold for a crack. They all crack at some point and do rattle when the crack becomes large.

Rattlinhg noise underneath my 2013 Chrysler 200 convertible when backing up or going forward slowly

Have the exhaust system checked, that would be the most common source of a rattle.

Hi there , I have Honda cr-v 2007 , 2.0 vtec 65k miles , car I very well looked after . But unfortuntley I have noticed last few days rattling sound coming from the engine , only when revs are coming down...

could be the heat shield fitted to the exhaust this will rattle after a time as it rusts away. can just cut it off or repack it with installation or put a exhaust clamp around it to stop it moving. only other thing that can rattle at these rpm is the cat if it has been damaged but you can tell if you smell eggs coming out of the exhaust this is usaly a good sign its damaged.

Rattling underneath when running

Jack up and put jack stands for safety or drive up ramps. Start engine and find whats rattling. You can use the back side of a hammer and hold against exhaust shield to see if the rattle stops when you put it against it. If it is a shield you can get large dryer clamps and put them together and go around shield and tighten, that will stop rattle without replacing shield. Make sure you let exhaust cool before you try and clamp.

My 98 CRV has a rattling noise while idiling from the driver's side somewhere. Any ideas what this could be?

Sounds like an exhaust shield rattle, the brackets that secure the heat shield in place come apart due to rust.

Rattle

Jack up the car when exhaust is cold, grab any heat shields to see if they are loose. You can also tap them with something to see if they vibrate. It's very common for the heat shield to rust and a corner can break free, making the annoying rattle. I've fixed this with a coat hanger cut to secure the loose shield, or a screw installed to hold it tight.
