I own a 1999 Ford Explorer. The oil gauge started fluctuating and eventually went all the way down. The dipstick shows full but the motor is making a loud noise that sounds as if oil is not going through the motor. I drove approximately 2 miles like this and haven't driven it since. Is the motor damaged beyond repair if is making a loud knocking noise? Would replacing the oil pump correct this problem?
- Only if your lucky will an oil pump fux the problem, once the pumps runs low on oil it destroys the rod and main bearings it only takes one second without oil to scar the crank or rods and since you have a knock I know for sure you lost one connecting rod so the motor will have to be torn down and rebuilt, no mechanic would put just an oil pump and one rod and not do an entire engine overhaul once you have to tear down that far you would only do a dis service of putting in $500.00 into fixing it knowing it would destroy itself down the road, you could get a short block which is cheeper but it's $1200.00 with the core plus labor and all other parts, oil belts hoses antifreeze it all adds up.
