Question about 1997 Nissan Maxima
The car just wouldn't crank over. I have had the battery replaced and that fixed it for awhile. Then it happened again, jumping it wouldn't keep it running. Had it towed in, they replaced the alternator. Now, it's doing it again. This last time, it seemed to cough and the dash lights -the air bag light- were coming on and off. It sounded sick, so I pulled over and turned it off thinking maybe whatever was wrong with the lights would 'reset' somehow. Then, of course, it wouldn't start at all. It barely turned over - a pitiful sound. It finally started; I drove it home holding my breath. The next day, we tried to jump it to take in to be looked at, but, jumping it wouldn't start it either. So, we had it towed. I have no answer yet, but, it better not be the battery or the alternator. What else is there?
I do not see how it could be anything else than the starter now that you have already replaced the battery and the alternator. However, the dash lights coming off and on tend to sound like loose wiring or bad connections regarding the three parts that have been already mentioned. The fact that it coughed sounds like dirty fuel related.
