thanks for the responce. I'm a mechanic also, module is a possibility ? only fires wrong when it stalls and I try to restart. does not misfire at all when it runs normally. it is definitely a heat up problem ( something is getting hot and shutting down ) been a big problem I've had for many years, how to test modules ? or some of them for that matter. both crank sensors have values, as does the cam sensor, fuel pressure is right on. cools down and restarts and runs fine, heats up an dies, shuts right off. thanks for your help, Guy

just to let you know, what I found was that the module was bad, boy, some people here aren't going to be able to use this info, but the wiring harness from the rear crank sensor to the ingition module was burned through from laying on the exhaust crossover pipe. whoever worked on the car before ( someone pulled the heads before the cust. stated ) didn't route the wiring correctly and it layed on the exhaust pipe and melted it and the wiring crossed. spliced in a new section, sealed it, new module and away the car went. no coil problems as I stated before, didn't have any now. thanks for the input. kinda weird thinking about it, the 3x and the 8x's ( from the CPK sensors ) readings worked when I was checking data stream.. this probably won't help anybody here, this one was a little different.

I had the same problem-my check engine kept coming up with crank sensor(replaced several times- the car would run for 2 days then stall again)finally checked and replaced the wiring harness and the car ran great for awhile. Now I have a whole new problem(abs lights started coming on and the gauges all died while driving at which point the car just stopped and woulkd not restart)thinking alternator(the battery works great in another car)

Sounds to be a bad ignition module or one of the coil packs. Will need a scan tool to know what cylinder (s) are misfiring in order to narrow it down.

What I'm thinking is that the ignition module is getting hot, shutting car down, won't fire right if you immediately try to start car, and then after ignition module cools down, resistance from heat is lowered to normal value and voltage pushes on thru normal resistance and car starts. However, I not only had this happen, but also what I'm bout to type causing same exact problem: One bad coil pack can cause this problem. If you can find out what cylinder (s) are misfiring and switch coil packs to watch and see if the misfire moves to the cylinder (s) you swapped the coil packs to. Best bet may be to go to a junkyard and get module and all 3 coil packs. This may be the cheapest route to go if you can't do the swapping coils as I described above. Good luck to you and defineatly keep me informed on what's going on.

Check your switch first..then wiring going to fuse panel on both under the dash and under the hood.

Also check the oil level.. some cars will shut down if low on oil.

Where is the crank position sensor on a 98 chevy malibu 2.4L? Also what is more apt to be bad, the crank position sensor or the camshaft position sensor?

If it is either sensor you will get a check engine light. So check this, A faulty fuel pump relay can cause the car to come to a complete stop while driving, its like running out of gas. It may be getting hot and shutting fuel pump down. Try swapping another relay of the same size, For the pump to see if its a bad relay. It may be is shutting the fuel pump down, when it gets hot.

Trying to find out where the fuel shut off sensor is located on a 2001 Dodge stratus. It will run for 10 minutes then stall and wont restart for a while and repeats

The auto stutdown relay will turn the fuel pump and fuel injection system off. This relay is marked in the underhood fuse relay panel. The senser that it may be shutting down for may be the coolant temperture senser. There might not be anything wrong with the senser as the therostate could be stuck and the cars overheating ( at the senser). There's an air charge temperture senser too and itr's screwed into the air cleaner housing or hose and if it gets too hot, or reports faulsely that it's too hot it'll shut down. But let's say that it's not too hot and the coolant is full and the cooling system is working right ( the readitor fan comes on when it's hot and shuts off as the fan brings the temperture down low enough that the fan is'nt needed. ) Their are parts in the ingtion that'll do this too. the coil. the computer, the distrubuter pickup and the crank and cam sensers. These things if they drop out won't nessarily turn the check engine light on but, will show on a licve time scanner as not putting a singnal out as they arn't working. The fuel pump can overheat as if the fuel filter may be partly clogged andf the pump is trying too hard to make pressure and the pump finally gets hot enough to stop. If the check engine light is on with the engine running it's likly that the codes stored in the computer will give a good ides as to why it's shutting down.

1997 chevy lumina get warm and then stalls will not restart

Hi, It sounds like you have a bad temperature sensor. Which is a plug like sensor that screws in. You will find it on or near where you coolant hoses connect to your engine. usually near the upper hose. Which would be screwed into the neck that connects to the head or on the head itself. Also check your radiator it could be plugged into the back (facing the fan). also if you have not changed your thermostat it wouldn't be a bad idea to do that also. which you will find under the neck of where the hose connects to your engine. Usually 2 or three bolts. Make sure your engine is cooled down when doing this service to your engine because of built up pressure in the coolant system which will cause burns or worse. I hope this helped you out. It would be greatly appreciated if you could rate my answer, thanks MIKE-

1999 chevy malibu runs good and sporadically dies when driving

When does it shut off? Need more information to help. I had a similar problem, but it would happen when it was hot outside and the fuel was less than 3/4 a tank. It ended up that someone had put moth balls in my fuel tank and it was gumming up the fuel pump.
