You are trying to redesign the vehicle to make it work like you want it to. You can't do that, just get it fixed to work electronically.

Open the doors. On the rear doors, check that the. child lock is not on (see the corresponding section).

Start with the basics. I've been caught out in the past by something obvious and silly. Re-raise all the rear seats. Look at all the links, mounts and lock points where all the seats lock down. Sometimes it's as simple as something stuck in the latch mechanism. Mine was an old work glove. Are the seat belts lined up correctly as these can get in the way as well.
Try resetting the seats in a different order. Some seat systems need to be positioned in a certain way to line up the lock latches.

Open the door from the outside and on the edge of the door there should be a red button with a slot for the tip of the key near the lock, turn this and this will de-activate the child lock on this door. Do this to the other door and the child lock will also be de-activated, to engage the child lock do the reverse of the above.
This is only on the back doors ok.

older can open the rear doors and on the trip there is a manual lever to turn them on

i would check all the fuses first. then make sure the connections are tight and free from corrosion where the wire plugs into the back windo heater

If it won't open from the inside, but opens from the outside, check the kids safety lock.

if it does not open from the outside either, chances are it has to be repaired by taking off carefully the door's internal plastic cover. That one is a tricky one...

fitting rear flaps is a simple job depending on the kit you buy......you may find the rear window gets dirtier with flaps fitted,due to spray being finer.(citroen is the same a puegeot)
