You will get no warning and physically checking it will tell you nothing unless there is obvious damage. Don't risk it, change when the manufacturers says normally around 80 000km intervals and even less if the cambelt has been changed before

Vibration in my Mitsubishi challenger over 60, new tail shaft new bearing in gearbox, still has not fixed. What else could it be?

maybe something loose under the body , stone skirts or worn ball joints , steering or suspension bushes. if its not the engine , or the engine could be out of balance many overhead cam motors have a second counter weight that runs from timeing belt, belt can break but engine shakes at high revs.

The reason your belt is making a noise is either your belt is worn and needs replacing or the belt tension is out of adjustment and needs checking and adjusting.
It is a good idea to replace it anyway specially if the belt has small cracks on the inside.

sounds to me like the belt is just sliding on the crank pulley. Could be a separated harmonic balancer. Check the big pulley on the bottom.

Cam belt timing settings

Clean off the pulley and housing around it and line up the marks, then put the belt on.

Jumped timing?

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.

Hi Kiwimarc69,
the service interval of your camblet is 100000kms. make sure you do the cam and crank seals as well when you get your cambelt replaced.
I would also suggest having a good look at the water pump as well cause sometimes they can show a little leak down the small exaut hole on the water pump housing.
Cheers
