Question about BMW 525

1 Answer

Car ran great. came home, parked it, 3 days later it wouldn't start. Fuel pump went bad, had towed to shop, he replaced pump, car ran great for about 10 miles and brand new pump burned up. mechanic baffled. what could be causing this?

okay thanks, i am going to relay all of this to him. Unfortunately he is not used to working on BMW's, no one is around here. I live kinda out of the way. closet bmw shop is about 100 miles. didn't want to pay for that tow, especially for a 20 year old car. thanks again.

It is odd that the fuel pump will go out that fast unless just by chance you have a defective unit. Check whether the pump works if directly connected to the battery, if it works it could be the wiring or the relay. Check out the electrical from the pump to the fuel injection relay and fuse. Check if there are no corroded insulation or loose connection of some sort. You may be shorting out and it may occur before or after the fuse in the circuit. Your voltage to the fuel pump should be constant and correct. Other than that check also if there is build up of sludge in the tank if it caused some clog which may had your pump work harder.

Failure to start. then will start next day. Mazda said it was fuel pump. They replaced $790.00. did not resolve problem. they kept 2 days and said it was battery. Replaced. @ weeks later same problem.

Well, they probably did put on either a bad fuel pump or should've done the relay. There is also a fuel pump REGULATOR that can cause a lot of trouble. Make them keep at it,since their work should be warranteed when they say they've fixed it. don-ohio

No it doesn't have fuel. What test did you do.? The fuel filter is dirty or the fuel pump is mechanically bound once in awhile.

Keep it simple and replace the fuel filter first, if thr fiiler has not been replaced within 30,000 miles or 1 year. Then it's a good chance that it's going to be the fuel filter.

After replacing fuel pump it run when it wants to.

In our shop we have had the same problem before, it turned out to be a new defective fuel pump by Bosh, two bad ones in a row, try a ohm meter on the pump when it runs and when does not compare the numbers , if they are very different, try a new brand of pump.
