Question about 1996 Volvo 850
The trac light and abs light started coming on while driving yesterday. After turning off engine and restarting they go off as usual and may or may not come back on while driving.
Is it true that bad wheel bearings could cause this or is it more likely abs control or something else. The brakes seem to work fine.
What is the connection between the trac, which I thought to be a transmission control for winter driving to avoid slippage and abs brakes? Just wondering why all the answers point to abs for this problem.
Thanks for any help, y'all are a great bunch!
I will bet money that it is the ABS/TRACS module. It is mounted under the master cylinder on the bottom of the ABS unit. These are very, very, very common failures. I have replaced hundreds of them in my career. To answer your other question, the TRACS system uses brakes. For example: in the snow, when the L or R wheel is spinning faster than the opposite, the TRACS will apply brake to the spinning wheel to slow it down to an equal speed. Hope this helps.

First , it is necessary to check the voltage from the alternator :
14 V DC while engine on .
More than 14 V can set the electronic system on security mode :
then "TRACS" and "ABS" light on the dashboard.
