2002 ford explorer 4.6 liter is idling at 3000 rpm after starting

The idle should stabilize within about 10 seconds. If the engine continues to idle over 1000 r.p.m. for more than 60 seconds, try resetting the ECU by disconnecting the negative terminal to the battery for one minute, then try again. If the problem persists, check the following:

  1. Operation of the Idle Air Controller;
  2. Operation of the throttle mechanism and throttle butterfly (adjust the back-stop if needed);
  3. Operation of the Throttle Position Sensor;
  4. Check for leaking vacuum hoses or a leaking intake manifold.
If all systems check out, have your ECU tested and replace if defective.

I would say its your Idle air control valve. Clean your air filter too.

The fuse for the horn (horn relay) is in the power distribution box located in the engine compartment (see picture below). That fuse in in the number 28 position (see other picture below) and the horn relay itself is located in the number 47 position. This information should be in your owners manual if you have one. Hi I'm AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair

I'm glad to help!

One of the biggest reasons an engine idles to high is because of vacuum leaks. Check all the hoses for cracks and while looking listen very close for the vacuum leak it will be a hissing sound. For further assistance visit my website below. Have an awesome day! Auto Repair

Tapping noise at 3000 rpm on 4.0 litre 1996 ford explorer.Valves are quiet at idle and up to 3000 rpm

have the oil pressure checked. i believe the specification is 40-60 psi at 2000 rpm. sticking valves and lifters can cause valve train noise. weak vavle springs can also be the problem. try running an engine cleaner such as gunk motor flush at your next oil change. follow directions specifically. obtain a product designed to aid in cleaning deposits on valves.

MY CHECK CHARGE SYSTEM LIGHT AND LITTLE BATTERY LIGHT KEEPS GOING OFF. I'VE HAD THE WIRING HARNESS TO THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED, THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR REPLACED AND TODAY A NEW BATTERY PUT IN. NOTHING IS...

The first question for you is, What is the charging output for the altenator at idle?? If less than 12.3 volts, replace altenator. Typically, the altenator gets tested at 2500-3000 rpm on a bench tester. Your problem may be in the low rpm output range.

Shackes and cuts out

What do you mean by it "shakes & cuts out while driving"? The vehicle literally shakes, or just the engine shakes at an idle or while driving? and it cuts out when, at idle, driving? Let me know when specifically it has this problem, it might help me on giving you a better suggestion(s) on what problem(s) might be causing this.

2002 ford explorer

I am guessing here w/o much info, 1 of maybe 4 things, idle speed contoller motor, low fuel pressure, dirty air filter, or lastly, carbon buildup on the throttle body throat. When cold idle the carbon blocks off the little needed air and the engines will run rough or just die.
