I have a 99 Cavalier with a coolant warning light on. I have filled the coolant and the light is still coming on. Any suggestions?

On a cold engine did you check the coolant level in both the reservoir and radiator? If so, most radiators have a coolant level switch, that switch could be causing you a problem? Mounted to the radiator, two wire connector.

Temp gauge in 98 pontiac wont work is there a fuse for it

Hi Tammie, Is the coolant level low ? If not , The engine coolant level switch grounds the indicator with the coolant level in the coolant reservoir below the minimum recommended level. The engine coolant level indicator module is on the right side of the radiator just down below from the radiator cap !

Low coolant light stays on

If you've checked your coolant level and it is ok, then more than likely engine oil is contaminating your cooling system. GM published a service bulletin on this exact problem. Possible sources of contamination are internal engine leaks, improper service procedures, or addition of excessive antileak addatives into the cooling system. The problem occurs when the oil leaves deposits
on the "low coolant warning sensor" which causes a false reading and puts the light on. The sensor is mounted on the right hand tank of the radiator. Flush the cooling system, replace the sensor, and add the proper amount of O.E. recommended coolant.

Replacing the Radiator

YOU NEED TO DRAIN THE COOLANT SYSTEM. REMOVE THE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY.YOU NEED TO UNBOLT SWING AWAY THE ENGINE TORQUE STRUT MOUNTS FROM THE UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT.LOOSEN THE THE THROUGH BOLTS IN THE STRUT MOUNTS FIRST TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE RUBBER BUSHING.YOU NEED TO REMOVE COOLANT FANS AND REMOVE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FROM THE LOW COOLANT SENSOR IN THE RIGHT RADIATOR TANK.DISCONECT THE COOLER LINES FROM THE RADIATOR CAP ENDS LINES PREVENT FLUID LOST.USE DRIP PAN TO CATCH FLUID.BESURE TO TAG OR NUMBER TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES SO THEY CAN BE INSTALL IN THE ORINAL POSITION.REMOVE THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG HOSE FROM RADIATOR AND REMOVE THE UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSES THEN PUT EVERY THING BACK VISA VERSA.BESURE REPLACE ALL HOSES, TOP HOSE AND BOTTOM RADIATOR HOSE REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.IF YOU BEEN HAVING OVER HEATING PROBLEMS REPLACE THERMOSTAT ALSO.

Coolant level warning on dash board

Check your coolant level in the radiator when the engine is COLD. If it is low, add more. Also check and add as needed in the reservoir to the specified level. If these are full, then you have a bad water level sensor that will need replacement. This is a plug in the top of the radiator with a wire coming out of it. It acts much like a door switch that turns on the light when you open the door, only where the door switch is a momentary contact operated by a spring, the sensor in the radiator reads continuity based on the water level in the radiator tank. When there is no fluid, there is no continuity and the light comes on.

Hope this helps,
matt

Low coolant light is on with full radiator

Check the coolant top up reservoir. Low coolant sensor is usually in the overflow/reserve container.
Wash out and clean any dirt or corrosion from the sensor prong.
Refill to correct level with fresh coolant, then recheck alarm operation.
