I had the same problem...for me, i had to replace my fuel pump (common problem in older domestic vehicles) because I would always drive my car until the "gas" light would come on before i refuel, as others would refer to as "driving on fumes", it caused my fuel pump to **** up all the dirt and residue in the fuel tank.

...but it can be anything as simple as a fuse, fuel guage wire, or fuel sensor...i would recommend for you to check your fuses and guage wires(if possible) before taking the car to a mechanic.

Providing the fuses are good, and there are no broken wires, you would have to remove the gas tank, which is where the sending unit is located. Inside the gas tank.

How to fix gas gauge?

If your gauge reads full or empty all the time or just doesn't move at all chances are its not the gauge but rather the sender unit in the gas tank itself.service on these is replacement only.Depending on the car,(unless you have an access hatch in the floor of the car) it will require dropping the gas tank out to replace this.It can get expensive to fix and you might just w ant to live with the problem.good luck

Gas gauge not reading

I would not post my email address on a website for the public to see.
The sending unit in the tank grounds the gauge with a resistor. The more gas in the tank the less resistance in the circuit. Someone would need to unplug the wiring harness at the tank and check the circuit with a meter.

hi it can really only be two things, first is the fuel sender on the pump inside the tank it could be stuffed or sticking causing a false reading, second it can also be a faulty fuel gauge on the dash.

Gas gauge

Sounds like you have a bare or broken wire earthing out on the chassis/body Trace the wires from the tank back to the engine bay and check that the wires are intact.
