On a 2002 Chev Cavalier, do you need any tools to remove the TPS or is it a twist lock?

Yeah, I read earlier that it is located on the Air intake hose, I have not looked at the car, I am helping a co-worker of mine as she can not afford traditional service.

Here is a better one for you, I am replacing it because her A/C is cycling while in drive but not in park. From what I understand, smaller engine cars disengage the clutch while the car is acceleraing for more power and it gets that information from the TPS. Am I on the right track?

  • carl_norwich Jun 29, 2009

thanks for the reponse! Pressures are good actually, I hooked my manifolds to it. Here is the gotca, the clutch only cycles while the vehicle is in gear (which causes bad a/c performance). While the car is in neutral/park the A/c works pefectly, normal cycles etc. regardless of where the trottle is. That eliminates clogs in the orfice or anywhere else. Thoughts?

  • carl_norwich Jun 30, 2009

Scanned it, no error messages. Unfortunatly, AZ's scanner is cheap and I could not check the trottle position so I am still not sure fi it is bad or not. I have seen them not trip a code but read way off.

A/C pressures are good, so that really only leaves the TPS or the High side pressure sensor, right?

Ok, I figured it out and it is the goofiest thing I have heard of.......

There was a TSB posted by Chev in Sept 2002 (see below)
    -----------------------------------------------------
    EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:AIR CONDITIONER

TSB #020138003 -- AIR CONDITIONING MAY BE INOPERATIVE OR MAY OPERATE INTERMITTENTLY, ENGINE HESITATION/SURGE. *TT (NHTSA ID #10006114, SEPTEMBER 01 2002)

TSB #290702 -- A CUSTOMER MAY COMPLAIN ABOUT AN INOPERATIVE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM OR A HESITATION MISFIRE UNDER ACCELERATION WHILE THE AIR CONDITIONING IS ON. *TT (NHTSA ID #637335, JULY 29 2002)
    -----------------------------------------------------

First off, notice there is no is no fix listed. :( So here is the deal, this is apparently very common but the TPS connector, OEM Part number #12102748, ACDELCO #PT1825 (located on the Hi Side line) goes bad and not only does it cause the cycling, it only does it in drive (not even in reverse or netural).

Thankfully, the part is only 15 dollars and 20 mins of time. I wanted to make sure and share in case anyone else ever runs into this.

Best thing to do is have the car scanned at Auto Zone since they scan free of charge. That would indicate is the TPS is faulty or not, the other thing to is the A/C may need to be serviced. The system may have the wrong amount of R143a in the system, there should be 80 to 105psi in the system with the compressor not engaged. With the engine running and compressor engaged the low pressure readings should be 25 tp 35psi and the high should ne 200 to 350psi. Any other reading out side what i gave you will give you poor A/C performance and abnormalities with the system,. Keep me posted. be glad to help. It is normal for the A/C clutch to cycle on and off to keep it from over pressurizing the system, but if the A/C is poor in performance then you may be too low or too might on the R134a in the system or a bad A/C pressure switch, Orifice tube. Keep me posted and good luck.

To many things to look for, start with a scan and let me know if there are any DTC codes P1524 to P1546 and let see if we can narrow things down. What are your high and low readings to the A/C system?? Keep me posted.

You can check the TPS old school. Your going to need a multi meter, the reading from the wire harness to the TPS should be 5 Volts and you can check the TPS by reading the resistance. The resistance reading on the TPS should have a smooth gradual change as you move the Throttle to the WOT, there should not be any spike or crazy drops as you move the throttle towards the WOT position. The other thing to is may be a bad a/c pressure switch, just replace it sine it's not that expensive and last would be moisture in the system that will ice up can cause the restriction when the car is in motion since the condenser get's more air flow to cool it down oppose to when it's at idle. Keep me posted friend and keep up the good work.

How do I get the cover behind the steering wheel to pop open on a 1994 Chev z24 Cavalier so I can change the wiper switch?

There is a special tool that screws onto the steering wheel threads and compresses the lock plate to release the snap ring so the lock plate will come off. It's a strong spring, so you'll have to rent the tool if you can't borrow one.

If you have the owners manual the code may be printed somewhere. Look under radio for guidance. Otherwise talk to a Chev dealer to learn how to get the code.

I have a 2002 Chev Cavalier that had the same exact problem. I replaced the bulb harness (purchased from a chevy dealership for around $5) which was fairly easy to do. I have had zero problems with it since.
