Question about 2000 Pontiac Sunfire
The car will start but only stay running for about 2-8 seconds then die. also seems that when the gas pedal is pressed it shakes the car for a second or 2 and then the engine dies. the car has been sitting for a while and I did buy the car in this condition in hopes of fixing the issue myself. however, I am no mechanic, I barely know the basics. the engine is a 2.2L.
When cars sit around for a while gas goes old quite quickly and it will start to turn to this gummy varnish like substance that stinks something terrible. I would suggest first starting with draining all of the gas out of the tank or if the fuel filter is back by the fuel tank you can just remove the filter and drain the tank at the same time. But definitely replace the fuel filter. When you do this and you smell the gas and it smells unusually different than normal, then you can pretty much guess that the problem is the bad gas. Running some good quality gas treatment through the tank for a couple of fill ups should take care of the problem. If that is not the problem I would check all your engine vacuum lines and make sure none of them are cracked or disconnected because that will cause an engine to not idle. Good luck
