Question about 2002 GMC Envoy
2002 Envoy six cylinder. Can anyone with nominal tools replace struts or is it best to have mechanic install.
You must use a spring compressor, its a safety thing, The strut unit can be removed w/out the compressor but once the unit is out (2 nuts on top, 1 large nut on bottom) the compressor must be used to allow you to remove the top center nut holding the strut into the top housing. Take special note of the spring position, it is exactly opposite for either side. I was able to rent the compressor tool for $54 at advanced auto supply and upon returning the tool got my entire deposit back

The manual states that you need to use a special spring compressor (J45400) to compress the spring to remove the strut. I have never done the job on the Envoy so I can't say for sure, but sometimes the manuals state that you need to use a special spring compressor and you are able to use any spring compressor. I would suggest taking a closer look at the strut assembly now as it is on the car and you can usually tell if you need a special compressor. My guess is that you don't, but I may be incorrect. Good luck.
