Question about 2004 Saturn VUE

1 Answer

The linkage is going on my 04 Saturn Vue (manual trans). It has trouble going into 1st and 3rd gears. How much does this typically cost to repair?

The problem is that the shifting is sloppy. I'll shift into first and it will pop back out or grind and hesitate going into gear; same with third gear. It doesn't do it all the time, but moreso with normal side-street driving. I've eliminated the theory of the need for a new clutch. Second, fourth, and fifth are all fine.

Allen,
How have you arrived at your conclusion? Have you manually switched the gears by hand at the shifter control on the linkage where it connects to the transmission? If it is still stiff, your problem may be in your hand(so to speak), at the linkage Lubricate it. Another place is below shifter knob a $45 dollar part may be worn. If you have eliminated low fluid levels and do not detect any leaks in your hydraulic clutch fluids you may be looking at another more expensive repair.

You have a slave cylinder for this trans. Pump the clutch pedal 25 times with the engine OFF. Then start it and try shifting it into each gear while parked. If this make it work your slave cylinder needs to be replaced

Sounds as if you may be having a problem with the clutch. It could be that the clutch plate is worn out and no longer disengages from the flywheel completely.

2004 Saturn Vue shifting problem

You should probably check the shifter cable. I had the same thing happen and then I couldn't shift into 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears. Then the cable snapped and I had to replace it. Be careful "man-handling" the shifter. If you break the shift linkage at the base of the shifter it's about $45 from the dealership. It's cheap plastic and doesn't take much to break. If you really want to know if it's the shift cable and not the gearbox crank the engine, have someone hold the clutch, disconnect the shift cables from the box, and manually shift the gears. If they move smooth, it's probably your cable which would mean there's a kink in it somewhere. You can't fix that. Depending on the VIN you're looking at anywhere from $189 (what mine cost with tax) to a little over $200 (from the dealership brand new). Talk to the parts desk at a Saturn dealership and they can tell you which one you need. Hope this helps
