It sounds like yoke bearing. Drop drive shaft and see if yoke pulls in and out with little to no turning involved.

2003 rear right axle shaft broke would that stop my tranmistion from shifting back and forth?

Having a broken axle shaft will let the diff spin freely, allowing the transmission to spin with no resistance. Resistance/pressure is what causes your transmission to shift. No resistance/pressure means no shifting.

Will 1994 dodge dakota 4x4 rear end match up to my 1995 dodge dakota 4x4. gear ratio wise

There should be a silver tag under one of the bolts on the rear ends. The numbers must match. If no tag is present with one wheel off the ground count the number of rotations and note the clock position of the final position of the drive shaft to make the wheel turn 2 complete revolutions. 3.50 rear end = 3 full turns of the drive shaft plus a half turn (6 o'clock.)

What is the rear diff fliud like? Is it full? Have you inspected the brakes, and if so, what have you found. As far as the u-joints go, get under the vehicle and see if you have free play in the joint area. Grab hold of the drive shaft and turn it back and forth (engine off of course and parking brake applied), and see if there is excessive play. Is there evidence of rusty coloration around the caps of the u-joints? Hard to say what the exact cause is from a chat.

Steering problem 1997 Dodge Ram V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 97000 miles I have replaced all the front tie rods.My steering wheel has alot of play in it, is that caused by power steering gearbox?...

the half shaft does not need to go in a certain way, Just as long as you get it in all the way. when checking steering play to see where it is. It's best to leave the truck off. Turn ignition on but dont start to unlock steering column, Then look by driverside tire while your buddy just turns the wheel only the amount of free play it has. Just back and forth usually a few inchs. till it starts getting tight. "Look at the steering shaft and you will see it turning back and forth. Then Look at the output on the pitman arm. It should move back and forth with steering shaft. slower but at the same rate. If it does not. you need a gearbox. but read up because you can adjust some of them with a locknot and screw on top of box. If it's ok. look at the drag link. And down the line. eventually you'l find the problem. Any more Q e-mail me at gethuge8@yahoo.com
