Question about 1990 Pontiac Grand Am

1990 Grand Am won't take fuel after loud "pop"

I have a 1990 Grand Am LE 4cyl. While driving home yesterday, heard a loud "pop" under the hood and then the car stopped taking gas. I got to the side of the road and let it sit and tried it again. It started driving fine and after 3 miles began to sputter and make backfiring type noises and stopped taking fuel again. I'd let off the gas and it would take gas again but then stop again. I was able to get it to an exit that way but only 3-4 miles each time. It starts just fine, but sputters since that "pop" I heard and won't take the gas for long. A light came on each time it stopped taking fuel. It looked like a boat to me for some reason as I think back on it.

I can't hear well enough to tell. What concerned me was the loud "pop" I heard. It sounded like it came from under the hood and that's when it stopped taking fuel. The car was not leaking anything and starts up just fine. Just can't go very far before it stops taking gas again.

The fuel pump is working. It can be heard. When the fuel line was checked it was pumping fuel out fine. The fuel filter was also changed to check that avenue.

Okay that will be the next step. Thanks so much.

That light that looked like a boat to you? That was your oil pressure light. Sounds to me you lost oil somewhere

Did you open the hood? It could be a popped serpentine belt or a broken timing chain or timing belt.

the pop you heard was likely a hose burst. dont go by what water is in your overflow tank. need to check coolant at the radiator cap but only when its stone cold.

Fuel filter

For 1990 Ford Tempo 2.3L FI 4cyl the Fuel Filter is located under hood, passenger side, front engine area, side of strut tower, mounted in fuel line assembly.

Hope helps (remember comment and rated this).

Check around heads on top of engine. Water pump leak should be wet under neath. Possible head gasket or you could have crack in engine block. Check for any signs of wetness oround engine.
