Clunking sound when shifting to park and reverse 2001 Buick

2001 Buick Century with only 45,000 original miles.
I just noticed a clunking sound...only sometimes...when I stop and shift to park. Also, once when I shifted to reverse the car didn't immediately go backward. There was a brief (5 second) interval and I heard a clunk.
I've also heard a sound under the hood. A friend says he thinks I have a belt problem.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Thanks

Transmission clunking when shifting to drive from park

could be your motor mounts are bad or are going bad the rubber mounts weaken over time and when u shift the engine tilts farther then it should when it shifts from park to reverse or park to drive. Its also a good idea to check your transmission fluid level with the car running and pull out the dipstick. if the level is fine and ur ****** isnt slipping then its prolly not the ******.

When i shift my automatic transmission from park to reverse or neutral to reverse there is a loud clunk

Either the u-joints are bad and that is what is clunking or the tranny fluid and filter need to be changed. usually it is the u-joints that clunk

95 buick lesabre shifts hard

1. There may be a vacuum leak anywhere under the hood.
2. The vacuum governor mounted on the transmission is broken (has a ruptured diaphragm). Easy to replace, has one bolt and a small (one inch) locking plate.
3. Replacement at AutoZone is around $12~~20.

Hope this helps!

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.
