Question about 1991 Subaru Legacy

2 Answers

Stalling engine I have a 1994 Liberty and occasionally the engine will almost stall, particularly in hot weather. It doesn't matter what speed I'm doing or whether I'm stopped. If I rev. the accelerator, it'll be OK for a while then it'll stall again without warning. I've had the fuel system cleaned out and the electronics checked. Everything seems OK. At all other times, it runs smoothly. Any advice please?

Look in to the throttle body right before the throttle plate and spray carb cleaner in the throttle body .
clean all the black carbon out .this carbon builds up around the throttle plate and causes the idle to drop cause it cant breath.use super unleaded to prevent this from building up again.
hope this helps.

thank you

Hi there think I can help, had the same issue with my 1991 Liberty 2.2 turned out the airflow meter was the problem. There is a metal sheild inside the top cover which covers the circuit board but very close, when it got hot under the bonnet the metal sheild warped enough to short out and stop the engine. It is well sealed but I pulled off the square black top lifted up the sheild and stuck insulating tape to the underside and stuck it back together. Might be worth trying a donar part if you can but sounds just like the prob I had.

code 17 is camshaft sensor error. a failed camshaft position sensor will show up in a number of ways. The worst-case scenario is that there is no spark in the combustion chamber. Other symptoms related to the position sensor can include excessively long cranking time when starting cold, rough running on an intermittent basis, poor idle, stumbling or hesitation, a drop in mileage and stalling upon acceleration. code 17 is for OBD-I system 1995 and before, OBD-II system 1996 and up. these symtoms can also be caused by bad wiring to sensor. good-day !!

My 1998 oldsmobile silhouette sometimes just cuts off sitting in traffic, any ideas/solutions???

Here are 3 very common causes for an engine stalling.

1. Old air filter, ( if it's old it restricts the engine from getting vital air.)

2. Oxygen sensor, ( if this part is bad the computer is unable to determine the proper fuel/air mix ratio and often leads to stalling.)

3. MAF, ( mass airflow ), sensor. Similarly can cause bad fuel/air mix ratio, and often leads to stalling. This can also reach a point of causing your engine not to start, particularly in cold weather.

I hope this helps you.

Seems you have a few problems, the irradic idle might be do to a bad idle air control valve/MAF, hard start issue i would need more info to help you better.

Low speed stalling while engine is warm

It just might be that the choke is stuck open.

Won't idle when hot

You may have a idle speed control valve issue, this part will set no code, just cause stalling, it is bolted to the side of the throttle body, not very expensive as parts go, you might want to replace it.
