Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

The engine is cutting out alot

The engine on my 97 sunfire is cutting out alot like it is choking, especially when I slightly accelerate. It will start to cut out and then on most occasions stall out. Could it be caused by a blocked fuel filter and air filter

Has the fuel filter been changed every 30,000 miles, if not do so and retest.

Zafira 2.0DTI 2004 diesel getting into the engine oil.The oil level keeps rising slightly and the oil pressure warning light keeps coming on when on tick over.

whatever the reason for diesel in oil is harmful as the diesel makes the oil thin and loose its ability to lubricate the engine properly.
1st it can be overfuelling and that would cause that alot of black smoke coming out of your exhaust especially when accelerating hard
2nd it can be that the injectors are not sealing properly and dripping fuel while the engine not running

Automatic choke location car stutters when cold but once warm it runs fine

I assume you have a carby on the engine. Is the auto choke is at the top of the carby and is attached to the top butterfly directly under the air cleaner. Normally a round black cap held in place by 3 screws in a metal ring. Loosen the screws and turn the black cap slightly to close off the butterfly slightly when cold. You will need to press on the accelerator to activate a ratchet cam to allow the choke to work

87 chevy hesitates only when in gear ???

The hard shifting is the result of your engine problem. Not sure whant kind of carbureter you have or wheather you have a distributor vacuum advance or not. It really sounds as though you have a base igntion timing probem. The distributor vacuum advance should be connected to manifold vacuum. Im assuming also that this is not a factory stock engine.

My 97 sunfire will crank and it starts its just for a split second and then dies

Hi

Most likely cause is the MAF sensor or the air mass sensor, same thing. also look for any holes in air pipes, too much air will choke the engine.

Hope this helps. If not get back to me

91 mitsubishi gto has random engine cut out.

Does this car have its original ECU? I ask this because this and a number of early 1990s Mitsubishi cars/truckas had isses with capaciors leaking. In truth I believe it is a matter of when and not if. As the ECU begins to fail the engine can begin to run poorly ( I speak from experience after changing both ECUs in my Montero and my son's Doge Stealth (3000GT) ) I did have an issue too with my son's Stealth running poorly, by good luck I happened to be looking under the hood with poor lighting and noticed a faint blue spark from the wiring leads by the coil after a good look I fould a wire would ground out when the engine was throttled; this caused the engine to torque slightly causing the wire to rub and finally ground out.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

MY 97 PONTIAC SUNFIRE IS BURNING A LOT OF GAS

Is the check engine light on? If you have a sensor that is bad, it will cause bad fuel mileage. Especially if it is an oxygen sensor. It might just need a tune-up.

When was the last time you had the timing belt replaced. Just occasionally, worn timing belts can jump a tooth, resulting in retarded ignition and/or retarded valve timing.
