your brake light switch has failed. this will also allow you to shift out of park when you hit the brake pedal. when you hit the brake pedal the brake light should come on and the shift interlock solenoid will activate(you might hear a clicking sound under the dash or near the shift handle) allowing you to shift out of park.

There are two fuses for the tail light circuits. That bare wire caused a short, which popped the fuse for the trailer lights circuit. Look at the fusebox under the hood, and you will be able to fix it.

SOURCE: I have a 1995 Toyota Avalon, and I cannot get it out of park. Break lights are working just fine. I tried pressing down the shift override button, but still no dice. Any idea what the most likely p
My guess would be the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
