Question about 1998 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Engine cuts out whenever gas tank is filled.

I recently had the gas tank replaced. Since then, whenever the tank is filled the engine cuts out until I've travelled about fifty miles or so. It stops then, but reoccurs each time the tank is filled. It is worse when accelerating from a stop. Sometimes when stopped I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep the engine going as the RPMs lurch up and down. The tank has been removed to check the seating of the vents, etc. but it is still happening. Also the fuel pump has been looked at and cleaned. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You have a check light on (OBD System Malfunction)

Why have you not had that taken care of ?

You have an EVAP System problem

Gas smell, gas leaking, check light on for awhile

Sounds as though you could care less.

My check engine light came on shortly after filling my gas tank. I did put more gas in the tank after the gas pump clicked that it was full. what could be the problem

If your check engine light came on shortly during or after filling the tank, and then goes off later, thats quite a relief. It really happens, and lucky for you dont have to bring your vehicle to a shop if the light persisted. Here are some tips regarding this issue: turn off the ignition switch before opening the fuel tank cap. Turn on and start only after the caps are properly closed. The scenario is that, whenever we refill gasoline on the tank, the pressure and the vacuum inside the tank are being upset, sometimes creating some kind of signal glitch which may be misinterpreted by the engine control module, and thus shortly illuminate the check engine light. I hope this lightened you up. Have a safe trip. : )

It's not likely to be your catylitic converter it's more likely your fuel pump is going bad or you have some damaged wiring to the fuel pump. If by chance you recently had it changed the ground probably didn't get connected right.

Rough idle, cruise control also stopped working

Sounds like you could have gotten some water in your fuel tank from that fill up. Go to a autoparts store and get a product to put in the tank that takes care of water in fuel. Use it when you fill the tank up a few times after and hopefully it goes away. Whenever you can't sustain power in the engine or it runs rough then your cruise control will constantly be shut off because the engine doesn't have the power to keep the speed up and should go away once your engine is running clean again.

Good Luck

The engine runs fine until it get to half a tank of gas.

I wonder if it could be that the tank's not getting vented properly... have you tried just taking the gas cap off and replacing it, without adding fuel? is there a suction sound when you take the cap off?

Chugs, acts like it's not getting gas once warmed up. Idle's fine

This problem can be several things. When your engine is cold, your computer is in a "closed loop" and just pretty much keeps the engine running until warmed up. After reaching operation temperature, the computer starts reading all the sensors. If one sensor is not connected or is defective, you will experience performance problems. Most of the time this will turn on the check engine light, but not always. Second is the fuel pump. This too will cause erratic engine problems.
